Rodent Control and Small Animal Control Products For Summer or Winter Motorhome Storage

by Barbara 25. July 2013 06:41

Question about how to reduce rodent damage when storing a motorhome.

Question: "What products do you suggest for safe guarding my motor home against invasions by mice? We store our motorhome in an old barn. Thanks. Steve."

Answer: Steve, we suggest rodent control products for the barn, the motorhome interior and the motorhome engine compartment.

The preferred units operate on AC and send continuous ultrasonic and/or sonic waves that irritate rodents and small animals and discourage them from invading your barn.

  1. In the barn. If you have electricity in the barn, we suggest you install AC powered ultrasonic rodent repellers. One of the most durable are the Bird-X Yard Guard units. Depending upon which products you choose, you can also set the frequencies to keep small animals out of the barn as well.
  2. Inside the motor home. Your choices include traditional mouse traps and battery powered electronic mouse and rat traps. If you have 120VAC in the motor home from the barn electricity, ultrasonic pest repellers can be plugged in and placed under the kitchen sink and around the perimeters of the walking area. We recommend the Transonic Pro . This unit has a steel case, has settings that include those sounds that irritate mice, rats, small animals, insects, etc. We suggest a minimum of two units. Using repellers is much less hassle than emptying traps of decomposing rodents!
  3. Inside the engine compartment. The P3 International Under Hood Rodent Repeller will help to keep the mice out. This unit attaches easily to the inside of your engine compartment. Power is long lasting via batteries, not included.
  4. Underneath the motorhome. If you have power, place two Transonic Pro pest repellers back to back and turn them on the sonic chattering setting which covers the mice as well. If you do not, then the best option would be the YardGuard units, two units either back to back in the center aimed toward the outside or aimed toward each other.

If you have no electricity, the best options are the Underhood Rodent Repeller, the Animal  Away Pro, the Yard Guards on battery power and kill traps that operate on battery power. The investment the first year can be several hundred dollars depending upon your housing situation for your motor home or trailer. Just remember the damage that will be limited or avoided over the years to come.

Thanks for your questions.

Repel Mice, Rats, Cats and Squirrels from Car Engine Compartments with Ultrasonic Repeller

by Barbara 19. June 2013 08:55

Question about how to keep animals from chewing up wiring in my parked car.

Q: " How can I keep mice and squirrels from getting under my car and nesting in my car's engine compartment. I live in the mountains of Colorado and do not have a garage. If I leave a vehicle parked for several days, I risk having small animals from nesting or crawling into the underside of my car. I've had to have wiring repaired several times. Thanks. Tom."

Answer: You are not the first person to ask for such a product. Years ago there was a 12 volt product made in China or India that attached to one' car battery and produced ultrasounds to get rid of pest animals under a vehicle. That was never imported.

Now P3 International has an inexpensive under the hood product that runs off C cells. This animal repeller, the P7825 Under Hood Animal Repeller, keeps your engine compartment safer from squirrels, rabbits, rats, martens/sables etc. At higher elevations or in colder weather, rats, cats and other animals seek shelter and warmth in engine compartments. There they chew on cables, wiring harnesses and other expensive parts.

Under Hood Pest Repeller Features

  • Easily mounted: 4 Eight Inch Vinyl Cable Ties Included Plus Two Screws with Plastic Screw Holders
  • Battery operated
  • Water Resistant
  • LED Indicator
  • On/Off Button

  • Frequency: 12kHz
  • Batteries:2 x C Alkaline batteries (not included)
  • Battery Life:6-8 months (longer with alkaline)
  • Dimensions (L x W x H):5 1/8" x 2 1/2" x 1 5/8"
  • Weight:4 oz.

Operation and Instructions:

  1. Open the battery door by unscrewing the metal screw.
  2. Insert Two C size batteries (not included, alkaline or better recommended).
  3. Close door. Unit is ready to use.
  4. Cautions: Avoid high temperature areas such as exhaust manifold. Do not place where unit will interfere with moving parts.
  5. Switch on by depressing and holding on/off button for 2 seconds. LED will light and unit switches on. Switch off if desire by holding button for 2 seconds.
  6. In operation, the unit sounds a 12 kHz frequency tone.
  7. Status LED lights up when unit is activated.
  8. Typical battery life is 1 year or more with alkaline battery.

Thank you for your question. This should help solve your problem.

Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller Coverage Area

by Barbara 30. December 2007 06:34

Q: "What is the total square footage that one Victor Sonic PestChaser PRO Rodent Repeller M792 covers?"

Answer: Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to your question. Ultrasonic frequencies are sound above the normal range of human hearing and act more like light than say sound from a radio or television. See my answer below after you read why the answer is not absolute. One reason for the M792's superiority is that it has two speakers so it fits in corners and sends sound down two walls at once. It is recommended for

Characteristics of Ultrasonic Sound:

  • Is Highly directional like FM radio waves.
  • Reflects from hard surfaces like bare walls, doors, etc. like light from a mirror.
  • Is absorbed and dampened by soft surfaces such as carpeting, drapes, furniture and cardboard boxes.
  • Can be effected by the humidity of the air.
  • Creates a "shadow" of silence behind an object it hits, a sheltered area for pests. Place traps or poison bait in that "shadow" or aim additional PestChasers be aimed at the back of the object and eliminate the "shadow."
Place the Victor® Heavy Duty PRO Sonic PestChaser ® ultrasonic rodent repellent M792 in a corner or against a wall. Elevated on non-skid feet, this economical, pet friendly, non-chemical solution for rodent problems is made by Woodstream. This ultrasonic mouse repeller with two speakers each 2.5 inches in diameter emits high frequency sound waves more than 2X the power output of standard ultrasonic pest control units. The Pestchaser M792 is the most powerful electronic pest control device in the market! Same technology used in restaurants, warehouses and on ships.

The physical size of this mouse repeller is 5 inches wide at the back by 3.5 inches high. The 6 foot long cord lets you place the pest repeller to effectively repel rodents from protected areas. For use in large sized rooms, kitchens, garages, attics and basements.

The sound is completely inaudible to people and non-rodent pets. Varying intensity and frequencies of ultrasonic sound waves prevents rodents from getting used to the Victor® Sonic PestChaser® ultrasonic rodent repellent . Since the sound is inaudible, a red LED light tells you the unit is working properly. It's kinder than traps, safer than poisons, and there are no dead rodents to dispose of so it minimizes human contact with mice, rats, and other disease-bearing rodents. Reduction in rodent activity should occur within 6-10 days. Estimated service life of the unit is 5-7 years or more. Economical: less than a penny a day in operating costs for electricity.

Note: Ultrasonic sound cannot penetrate furniture, cabinets or walls. Multiple units required for multiple rooms.

Note: Best results are with other rodent control methods:
  • Sanitation: Use in a clean area with no spilled foodstuffs or accumulated trash.
  • Exclusion: Reduce access points for rodents. Use hardware cloth to seal pipes, vent screens, A/C ducts and holes in siding. A mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a pencil.
  • Reduce Populations: For heavy infestations, you may first have to reduce populations of rodents to smaller levels by using baits and traps. Newer electric traps kill humanely, run on battery power, and are easily emptied.
