Stop Under Sink Water Leaks With Floodstop Water Valve Unit for Hot and Cold Water Lines

by Barbara 22. July 2012 07:01

Question about the FloodStop for Sinks Lead Free Water Valve FS3/8CD.

Question: "Our neighbor recently had extensive water damage from a leak under a bathroom sink. The sink is in a rarely used bathroom. The first hint of the water leak was the damp spot on the ceiling in the room below. What product do you suggest for protecting our guest room sink which is rarely used? Thanks. Sam."

Answer:  For a single location, install the FloodStop for Sinks Lead Free Water Valve FS3/8CD. The "CD" stands for compression fitting, i.e. no soldering is required. The Floodcheck water valves connect to the angle stops and supply lines. FloodStop water valves are full port ball valves that meet the California and Vermont lead free water valve standards for drinking water.  Add additional sensors for more coverage under the sink. Do remember that you will need an unswitched electrical outlet for power: electricity is used only when the sensor detects water.

When a hot or cold water leak is detected, Floodstop shuts off the water below the sink and sounds an 87 db alarm.

Installation:

Connect the water valve to cold and hot water lines under the sink.
    Mount the control unit.
    Place sensor(s) on floor.
Plug power supply into an unswitched outlet. Note: electricity is used only when the sensor detects water.

NOTE: DO NOT PLACE SENSOR DIRECTLY ON METAL PAN OR DAMP FLOOR. If no water is present and alarm sounds, place paper towel or cloth under sensor to "insulate" against floor dampness or metal of pan. When the paper or cloth gets wet, the sensor activates the shut-off and sounds the alarm.

How FloodStop (FS 3/8-CD) Works:

FloodStop valves connect to the angle stops and supply lines.
Water leak sensor is placed at the base of the fixture (sink, laundry tubs, bathtub, etc.).
Valve remains open until a water leak or water loss is detected.
Water on the sensor signals the Floodstop controller which closes the valve and alarms.
Valve remains closed until system is reset, and sensor is dry.

FloodStop (FS 3/8-CD) Components:

Motorized Ball Valves (Two Valves, 3/8 inch Compression Fitting).
Control unit with battery backup (4 C batteries, not included).
AC power adaptor (or use 4 C Batteries as primary power source).
    Water leak sensor (1.25" X 7.5").
    Output contact wires (2).

Technical Specifications:

UL Listed Class 2 Wall Adaptor, 115AC/9VDC.
UPC listed, full port, motorized ball valves.
    Motor operates at 6VDC.
Rated 0-180 PSI. Max 250 PSI. Solid brass.
    Signal outputs: 2 normally closed.
    Alarm: beeping with mute button.

Features:

For added water detection protection, add more sensors. Sensors plug into sensors, NOT the Control Box.
The 3/8 inch valve is 3.75 inches long.
Controller has reset and test buttons to test valve performance plus battery back up.
Easy to install, operate, and maintain.
Designed for residential, condo and apartment dwellings.
Full port ball valves automatically shut off water supply to sink when water sensor/sensors get wet.
    Power: 120VAC and/or battery backup (4 C batteries).
No wires to route throughout the home.
    Alarm: beeping with mute button.
Water Sensor: 1.5" X 7.5", double sided. Additional sensors may be added in series.
AC Adapter Cord Length: 6 Ft.
Wire Length from the Controller to the Valve: About 30 Inches Long.
    FloodStop Controller:
3 buttons: Mute, Close Valve and Open Valve.
Water sensitivity adjustment. Clockwise: less sensitive. Counter clockwise: More sensitive.
        4-pin connection to valve/sensor connector.
Outputs: Normally closed. Contacts for any device that can utilize them, like auto phone dialers, alarm systems, X10 home automations devices.
    One year limited manufacturer warranty.

I hope this helps with your situation.

If you want whole house protection, a install the Floodstop Whole House Auto Water Valve System. This unit comes in 3/4”, 1” and 1.25” valve sizes. Included with each system are one Motorized Full-Port Ball Valve, one Controller (that shuts off the main water valve),four Sensor Modules, four sensors to place in areas you want protected, one transformer for the controller and four low voltage transformers for the sensor modules. This unit screws onto the water pipe, i.e. it is an NPT or National Pipe Thread Tapered Thread.

Choosing John Sterling Window Guards for Casement Windows Based Upon Screen Sizes

by Barbara 16. July 2012 10:59

Question about John Sterling window guards.

Q: " I have just screen sizes for casement windows I want to protect with window guards. Can you help me? Thanks. Sondra.

Answer:

Here is a list of the screen sizes you provided and the window guards suggested by John Sterling.

If the second dimension is height, then turn the guards to mount vertically like prison bars. Use only the fixed if possible because the swing units could swing down and cause injury to someone.

Please go to the SafeHomeProducts.com website for more information.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your questions.

Childproofing A Home Against the Biggest Home Risks to Children

by Barbara 8. July 2012 06:00

Question about the most common dangers to children in and around homes.

Q: "We have a 6 month old baby, our first. Where should we begin to childproof our home? What are the biggest risks to a toddler or younger child? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: According to the USA Today, July 5, 2012 report, the Consumer Protection Product Safety Commission lists drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture as most common dangers. You may recall the baby crib recall. The cribs our parents used for us and we used for our children and grandchildren can no longer be sold. Remember the double release locks you pushed with your foot and the side dropped?  The Commission received reports and does research to determine which products are safe.

Drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture are considered the most common risks to young children. Cordless window blinds are recommended to reduce risks of strangulation.

The COSC recommends that whatever safety devices you buy for do-it-yourself installation or have installed by handymen or professional childproofers meet voluntary industry standards or are recommended by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Common sense tells you that poisons, medications, dishwasher detergent, etc. must be stored in secure places whether that place is a cupboard or a closet.

Here are a few suggestions based upon our customers' purchases:

These are childproofing products that are easily installed and may save the life of your child or grandchild or a visiting child.

Thank you for your questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Cardinal Gates Silver Deck Shield Net with 1/2 Inch Mesh Openings for Child Safety

by Barbara 25. April 2012 06:12

Question about the advantages of the Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting over the Cardinal Gates Black Deck Shield Netting

Q: "Why is the silver so much more expensive than the black? Why would installing it be better than the black? Thanks. Tom."

Answer: The silver deck shield netting has a longer life and is less visible on light colored decks or when used to block animals (or children) from pushing between the pickets of fences. Both are easily installed using the wire ties, etc. included with each deck net kit. Both are made from polypropylene plastic and UV protected.

The major differences between the silver and the black deck netting are as follows:

  • Thickness: Silver is substantially sturdier and thicker—more than 7 times thicker than black. Black is approximately 0.26mm thick. Silver is approximately 1.98mm thick.
  • Size of openings: Silver: each "mesh" rectangle measures ½-inch hole size .  Black: each "mesh" rectangle measures about 1.25" x .75".
  • Visibility: silver is even less visible from a distance.
  • Height: 35 inches for black and 36 inches for the silver
  • Can cut with scissors
  • Ideal for homeowner associations
  • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
  • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.

There are two other lengths available.

Thank you for your question.

Barbara

ToppleStop Furniture Safety Straps Secure TVs and Furniture For Kid Safety

by Barbara 10. February 2012 08:50

Question about keeping TV sets from injuring or killing children using furniture securing devices.

Q:"In the USA Today on February 9, 2012, a news article talked about 4 children killed or critically injured in the Chicago area when TV's fell on them. How can I make sure my children are safe? We have one old style television and a big screen that sits on a table. Thanks. Sara.

Answer: TV's can injure or kill children. Even small sets when knocked off a tall dresser are dangerous. In 2010 or 2011 Consumer Reports recommended ToppleStop furniture and TV straps for securing furniture. Each set of Topple Stops has two straps, one secures to a wall stud on one to the TV set or the stand. One accident was when a TV set sat on a flimsy aquarium stand. TV sets must be on a heavy piece of furniture with slip resistant feet and a low center of gravity. Children also like to pull out dresser drawers and try to clim to the top: a disaster waiting to happen.

So Topple Stops are furniture straps that you attach to the back of solidly set furniture and secure to wall studs behind the furniture. Topple Stops let you anchor appliances and furniture that weighs up to 400 lbs. For items that weigh up to 200 lbs. install a minimum of 1 kit with two point attaching. You need two kits or four point attachment for objects that weigh 200 to 400 lbs. Remember that nothing substitutes for parental supervision.

For metal units, you attach Topple Stop half with an adhesive pad to a dry surface cleaned with isopropyl alcohol (that gets off any residual grease). Then you attach the other half to a wall stud.

For wooden units, the preferred attachment method is using #8 x 1 inch wood screws to attach the fasteners to the frame or the inside edges top or sides of the furniture.

The wall attachment requires using #10 x 2 inch wood screws to the wall studs behind the furniture. If studs are metal, use t-bar anchors to toggle bolts. You can use wall anchors if each has a minimum holding strength of 100 pounds.

Heavy Duty ToppleStop Furniture Fastening System Kit Contents:

  • Two (2) grey Thumb Lock fasteners, 2" long by one wide with 3/4" lock lever. Use with wood screws or 3M VHB adhesive attachment. (Bonding Times: Wait four hours before adding strap. Adhesive fully bonds after 72 hours.)
  • Two (2) 12" long, 3/4" wide grey locking strap with grommet for wood screw attachment.
  • Four (4) #8 x 1" wood screws for furniture attachment    Two (2) #10 x 2" wood screws for wood wall stud attachment.

Thumb lock fastener attaches to locking strap. Fastener can be moved and locked in either direction on the strap. Lift locking lever to "open." Lock fastener on strap by pushing lever down firmly. Note: Thumb Lock adhesive is non-hardening. Fasteners can be removed without damaging surface if slowly and gently pried off with appropriate tool.Suggestion: Install when children are not present, i.e. asleep for the night.

We also recommend Topple Stops for use in day care centers, hotels, motels, etc. to increase safety and reduce liability insurance costs.

Product Performance Warranty: This product does NOT replace child supervision. This product is only intended to help or reduce movement of equipment during jarring movement. It is common understanding that fastened equipment should fare better during jarring movement than equipment that is not fastened, helping to reduce the amount of damage and injury that could result. No warranty can be properly applied to the performance of the products due to the uncertainty of forces generated, and numerous variables involved in a jarring event, or natural disaster. Products that are defective in material and workmanship prior to installation of the product will be replaced. The user or third party installer accepts liability for injury, loss, or damage, direct or consequential, arising from use or misuse or inability to use the product.

Thanks for your question.

Sliding Door Lock and Sliding Window Lock for Security and Child Safety

by Barbara 2. January 2012 10:42

Question about how to install a sliding door lock on my interior closet doors, my exterior slider windows and my patio sliding door.

Q: "I do not want to install window guards on my windows but I do want to get some ventilation during the winter months here in Florida. We are on the Atlantic side and the breezes are great right now (January). I am concerned about security on the patio door. and downstairs windows. For the upstairs windows, I am concerned more about child safety when grandkids visit. What do you suggest? Thanks. Julie."

Answer: The Cardinal Gates Patio Door Lock comes only in white. the Patio Door Guardian allows you to lock the door with a 3" gap for ventilation. Use on right and left handed sliding doors. Recognized as "one of the best new child safety products" by the National Safe Kids Campaign in Washington, D.C., the Patio Door Guardian works double duty as both a security device and as a childproofing lock.  This unit has a 2 position spring loaded lock with a left and right stop. The keeper plates allows for a 3 inch ventilation gap without minimizing security. This fits most sliding doors and most windows that are vinyl, aluminum or wood. The questions and answers below should help you make your decision.

A new option for sliding doors is the Cardinal Gate Lock-N-Block Sliding Door Gate This gate requires some minor assembly.

Assembly Instructions

  • Choose appropriate screw-in clamps for your door. Screw clamps into gate. These clips will fasten to your open sliding glass door.
  • Screw the stabilized pads into the opposite side of gate. These fit into C-channel of the door frame.
  • Attach gate to open door with clamps, fitting gate into door jamb. Close door to lock in gate.
  • Screw door stop to sliding track to secure sliding door.

Gate Operation:

  • Push red safety button and lift handle 90 degrees upward.
  • Pull gate to open.
  • Close gate and lower handle back to original position.
  • Gate will click when locked.

Gate Dimensions :

  • Gate width is 24"
  • Height 30.5"
  • Thickness: 1"

  • Fits all standard sliding doors 1" and 1.5" thick

Lock and Block Sliding Glass Door Gate Features :

  • Patent Pending! Only sliding glass door gate available on the market today!
  • Securely clamps onto the functional panel of a sliding panel door.
  • Helps reduce the risk of injury to your infant or pet, as well as damage to your sliding screen door.
  • Safety gate swings open in both directions, allowing easy entering and existing.
  • Use gate and screen door simultaneously
  • Steel construction
  • Gate swings open in both directions
  • 1 year manufacturer against warranty defects.
  • Gives visibility to sliding doors so child does not run into the sliding door.
  • Along with parent supervision, parents can feel comfortable leaving the sliding door open allowing the fresh air to circulate.
  • Can also be used as a pet gate.
  • Color: White gate with gray hardware.

Questions and Answers:

  •  Will the Patio Door Guardian work on all Patio Doors? This lock is designed to work on all inside sliding Patio Doors.
  •  Will the Patio Door Guardian secure my Patio Door from intruders? This lock is designed to keep your patio door closed and though it does have security benefits it does not lock with a key. It will deter intruders as significant force would have to be used to penetrate the door.
  •  When I mount the Patio Door Guardian to my patio door, how do I determine where to put the screws? You must mount the screws away from the edge of the glass on the sliding door, so you do not break the glass. Do not rely only on the location of mounting plate holes provided with your Patio Door Guardian instructions. Hold the lock up to the desired height and mark your mounting holes away from the glass edge of the door.

I would look at other options for sliding closet doors unless your doors are solid and white. One option would be the Window Guardian Window Stoppers, 4/BOX which are removable suction cups that can stop sliding closet doors as well as windows to keep kids out. These would have to placed in at least two places per door to keep the door from sliding.

Thank you for your question.

Survival Kits and Emergency Water Options for Home or Business Emergency Preparedness

by Barbara 26. November 2011 13:44

Question about choosing a survival kit and survival supplies for home use.

Q:"We are a family of 4 who live on an island off the coast of North Carolina. Typically we have some advance warning that hurricane force winds are on the way. We need emergency water and food in case power stays off for more than a few days. Our fear is that our generator may fail and we'll have nothing but canned food. Or we may have to evacuate inland and will have trouble finding food. What are your recommendations? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: For a family of 4, the Small Business/Family Support Emergency Survival Kit would give your family a complete survival kit for 5 people for up to 3 days. You could supplement this with food you have on hand.  The food bars and water packets have a 5 year shelf life.

This 3 Day/5 Person Survival Kit Contents Include:

  • food bars which are Kosher and meet Halal standards
  • water rations
  • matches
  • emergency blankets
  • candles
  • emergency guidebook
  • work gloves
  • infectious waste bags
  • pliers
  • whistle
  • playing cards
  • water purification tablets
  • duct tape
  • utility bags
  • carrying case
  • tissue packs
  • AM/FM radio with battery

You could also purchase the food bars and water packets separately. For example, a good choice would be the Survivor Industries Mainstay 3600 Emergency Food Bars, 90 Bars This package contains 90 food bars that each supply 400 calories. So depending upon the size of the person and his/her activity level, 3 to 6 bars per day would keep this person with proper nutrition. If you were remaining at home,

Mainstay 3600 Emergency Food Bar Key Benefits:

  • 5 year Shelf Life
  • Non-Thirst Provoking

  • 3 disposable tie clamps to hold the bag to water spigot during the approximate 10 minute time that it takes to fill the bag. (Dependent upon water pressure.)
  • 1 reusable pump with locking system. Locks the pump to the liner bag.

The AquaPod liner is made from FDA approved plastic, i.e. LDPE Plastic (Low Density Polyethylene Plastic). The shelf life is up to 10 years depending upon storage. Made in the USA.

I also recommend you purchase a copy of Wallace Guidebook for Emergency Care and Survival. This inexpensive book may literally save your life.

Installing a Kids Edge Hearth Pad with Metal Backing to Protect Toddler Against Injury

by Barbara 20. October 2011 13:41

Question about the Kids Edge Hearth Pad Metal Frame BROWN, to 78 in.

Q: "I have a fireplace hearth that is made of irregular stones. It is straight across the front and has two returns each of which is about 20 inches. So it is a rectangle. The actual length is 90 inches. How does the metal attach to the hearth and what do I need to do to make it fit?  I have a toddler and am worried about her getting hurt.Thanks. Adam."

Answer: This is the correct hearth pad for an irregular stone hearth. First, the hearth must be at least 1.5 inches above the floor. Second, you will need to purchase an Kids Edge Metal Hearth Pad Extension, BROWN, 24 In. to add to the middle of your hearth pad for the proper length.

To install the hearth pad after unpacking:

  1. Remove tape on tightening rod (6). Remove filler pad (2) from inside cardboard insert and set aside for later use.
  2. There are two sections. The left side is completely covered with pad. The right side, partially covered with pad, slides under the left side for adjustment. You would add the extension to this part.
  3. Then extend sections of unit and place on hearth.
  4. Pull section together until snug on hearth.
  5. Without allowing sections to slide, remove unit and turn over to expose tightening rod.
  6. Insert rod hook into nearest hole and pull sections apart so there is enough tension to keep the hook in hole.
  7. Reposition unit on hearth. Insert Phillips screwdriver into hole at right corner
  8. Turn tightening bolt clockwise until tension is felt.
  9. Make sure the unit is in place by pushing down and back at corners.
  10. Tighten bolt further until unit is secure on hearth.
  11. NOTE: if unit is not secure and tightening bolt will not turn further, then loosen bolt, remove unit and move adjustment hook to next hole. Now reinstall unit.
  12. CAUTION: IT IS POSSIBLE TO TIGHTEN BOLT TOO MUCH CAUSING ENDS TO FLARE OUT CAUSING LOSS OF GRIP.

CUTTING FILLER PAD

  1. For appearance, this step is IMPORTANT. Measure the gap where frame is exposed. Add 3/8 inch to that measurement and mark the filler pad
  2. Place pad on edge of cardboard box, matching mark on pad with black alignment on box.
  3. Use only a sharp long-blade knife such as a fillet knife. DO NOT use a razor knife, utility knife, or other short-blade knife.
  4. Lubricate entire length of knife blade with liquid soap or soapy water.
  5. With light pressure, move knife back and forth, keeping the blade straight with alignment line.
  6.  After top half of pad is cut, turn pad over and repeat.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Cardinal Gates Metal-Backed Hearth Guard is designed to help prevent injuries. However, it is always possible for some injuries to occur even thought a protective device is used. We suggest adult supervision at all times. PAD IS “UL RECOGNIZED.”

INSTALLING FILLER PAD

  1. Peel off adhesive backing that bonds to front of frame only.
  2. Carefully press right end of filler pad against pad on right side of frame.
  3. Allow filler pad to rest on top of frame while pressing front of pad into place.
  4. Once the front of filler pad is bonded to frame, lift top corner of filler pad and peel off remainder of adhesive backing.
  5. Now press down on top of filler pad to bond to frame.
  6. Installation is now complete. To remove unit, simply loosen bolt to release tension.

Thank you for your question. Enjoy your little one: she will grow up way too fast!

Sincerely,

Barbara

Starting a Safety Proofing Business With Anti-Slip Grip-On Solution for Concrete and Tile Floors

by Barbara 20. September 2011 15:00

Question about Grip On Anti=slip Solution as part of a business to safety proof hard surfaced flooring such as ceramic tile, concrete, etc.

Q: "I recently took an early retirement. I read about Grip On and am interested in starting a safety proofing business for slippery floors. Last week I went to a restaurant with ceramic tile that was slippery. Many times concrete outside malls and stores are slick when it rains. And my own garage floor is dangerous when it gets wet. How difficult is Grip On to apply, what would I need to start a business and how would I know what to charge? Thanks. Frank."

Answer: You didn't mention the state or town where you live. My advice is to learn about local requirements for a business and decide if you want a corporation such as a Chapter S. Seeking advice about that from a business attorney and/or local Chamber of Commerce is a great first step. Once you have your business and insurance in place, then it is time to seek out customers who need hard surfaces such as concrete and tile treated to protect their customers and themselves from slip and fall accidents.

The five gallon buckets are probably the most economical way to start. Each bucket treats about 2000 square feet of flooring. Each bucket weighs 50 lbs. When business improves, purchase the  55 gallon drums of Grip On: you can refill the bucket using a pump.  This 55 gallon size will treat about 22,000 square feet of hard surfaces. Ships by truck only: 4 drums can fit on each skid. Approximate shipping cost: $300 per skid with one drum. The shelf life is indefinite: with a good business, you''ll get through this quantity in weeks or days depending upon the square footage you will be covering. The lid of the drum stays on. There are two holes, one 4 inch hole and one 2 inch hole. Purchase a vacuum or hose pump from your local hardware store. (Cost about $15).

What you will need for faster application in addition to the Grip On are:

  • a 20 lb cotton mop
  • a mop bucket with wringer
  • an 18 inch to 24 inch squeegee
  • a wet vac to make removal of dirty and clean water faster
  • a long extension cord for the wet vac
  • a source of clean water
  • a good cleaning solution with degreaser.
  • roller ruler to calculate accurately the length and width of areas to be treated in linear feet.
  • a calculator to determine the square feet to be treated (or a pencil and paper and the ability to multiply!)

As far as what to charge, you need to calculate the cost of the Grip On and pre-cleaning solution based upon the square footage of the project. Next you need to determine what your hourly wage should be based upon the local economy, your overhead (insurance, etc.), how you will be paid (check or credit card) and if there is another individual or company providing the same service in your area. You may be able to see public bids for local municipal buildings and see what the winning bids were.  Certainly $1.00 a square foot might be reasonable in a more rural area while in New York City a reasonable charge might be $2.50 to $5.00 a square foot.

Remember what you are selling is safety. Insurance rates for restaurants, malls, etc. are based on many factors including accident rates. The fewer claims for slip and fall accidents the lower rates those companies will pay.

Slip/fall accidents are a major problem for employers and customers as well as homeowners. Just think of what happens to those in the Northern states who don't deice their sidewalks and someone falls and breaks a leg! The statistics about insurance liability claims are that slip/fall accidents rank second after auto accidents claims., And slip/fall accidents, paid for by workers compensation claims, have greatly increased over the last 10 years.

As a general rule of law, according to Grip On's attorneys, if an owner or possessor of a premises knows of a potentially dangerous condition, which could cause harm and he or she knows there is a means to prevent that harm, the inference is that the injured party would be more likely to hold that owner liable and have higher damage claims. Insurance companies don't like accident claims: keeping business insurance is important. When a company is canceled for insurance, other insurance companies are less likely to insure or will significantly increase premiums due to the risks they see in the future.

Do make sure that you ask each customer for his/her permission to use you and your company as a reference. I suggest a website for your area where you can have customers rate your service and make comments about the change that Grip On made for their hard surfaced flooring such as ceramic tile, glazed brick, marble, polished stone, terrazzo, river rock, concrete, and quarry tile.

Do remember that porcelain bathtubs are still fixtures in many homes, hotels and motels. Applying Grip On means no more tub mats, stick on plastic "fish", etc.

Among customer who use GripOn are:Dr. Phil's House,McDonalds Restaurants, Trump Properties Exxon/Mobil, Burger King Restaurants, Tanasaka Power Plant ,Cities of New York & New Jersey ,City of Los Angeles ,Bureau of Engraving US Government ,Life Care Centers of America, G.L. Homes, Covenant Care of America, Manor Care Nursing Center, Darcy Hall Nursing Center, Boca Raton Rehabilitation, Spring House Manor, Elks Lodges of Florida, VA Hospitals, Delray Racquet and Country Club, Residents of Century Villages, Pete's Five Star Corporation, Cambridge Investment (Burger King), McDonald's Corporation, Marriott's Hotel and Assisted Living, 7-11 Stores ,Wolfe's Restaurant ,Carlucci's Restaurant Corporation, Billotti's Restaurant Corporation, Pompano Pizza, Onaisas Coney Island, Shopping Center Markets, Outback Steak Hous.

I hope this information has been helpful.

Thank you for the question.
