WaterCop Motorized Water Shut-Off Valve Installation Locations

by Barbara 8. January 2018 04:54

Question: Where to install the WaterCop Classic Motorized Actuator Lead Free Water Valve, .75 In.?

Answer: Indoors, on the main incoming water line. Install the valve upstream from where the water system branches off to other appliances and downstream from water meters and pressure regulators. Do not install outdoors! Install the WaterCop valve so that the home or business owner can readily access the face of the WaterCop actuator. That way the system can easily be reset if tripped by a moisture sensor. Also the water can be shut off if repairs need to be made to a water heater, etc. The business or home owner should periodcally cycle the valve to open and close to prevent any water deposit build-up. This ensures proper operation. Also make sure the valve does not interfere with water flow to fire suppression and irrigation systems.

WaterCop actuators can respond to an almost unlimited number of moisture sensors. Do remember that a signal repeater may be necessary for sensors located far from the unit. The maximum transmission range is up tp 200 feet, clear line of sight. Actual effective working range is less than that. The WaterCop is a whole house or zoned water shut off full port ball valve with actuator that responds to radio signals from moisture sensors (waterhounds) or freeze alert sensors (FreezeHounds. Water shuts off almost instantly when sensor/s are activated and an alarm sounds at that sensor/s. AC powered or battery powered sensors have 1 or 2 moistures probes. Install sensors under water dispensing refrigerators, dishwashers, etc.

Thanks again for your question. Please contact us if you need more information.

Sincerely,
Barbara

Installation Height for Carbon Monoxide Alarms Is Your Choice

by Barbara 8. February 2013 10:52

Question about  installation height for most effective use of carbon monoxide alarms

Q:"How high do I need to install carbon monoxide alarms in my home?" Thanks. Rebecca

Answer: According to information from one of our manufacturers, you can install a CO alarm at any height in your home. The reason is that the molecular weight of air is almost identical to the weight of carbon monoxide. Air is typically composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Nitrogen has a specific weight of 28.013 while carbon monoxide is almost identical 28.011. CO mixes with
Air as their weights are approximately the same.

We advise you put the unit high enough that a child cannot tamper with the unit. Also remember that a minimum of 3 carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for a two story home, one on each level near the stairwells. Put one inside each bedroom if you close bedroom doors at night.

Direct plug-in units, CO alarms connected to a 12 or 24 volt security system and 9 volt battery operated ones give you many options.

We prefer the Costar 9RV, a 9 volt battery powered CO alarm that is for homes or recreational vehicles. These easily mount with two screws. The units cannot be reinstalled on the mounts unless there are batteries installed.

For homes with wired security systems, the CoStar Security System Carbon Monoxide Alarm,12-24SIR is a great choice.

Costar carbon monoxide alarms use a unique sensor that mimics red blood cells. Each sensor takes 28 days to "grow." The sensor reacts with carbon monoxide just as red blood cells do in our bodies. In other words, when a human is exposed to CO, the oxygen in the blood that attaches to red blood cells is replaced gradually by carbon monoxide. When carbon monoxide levels in an area near the sensor reach a level of 70 parts per million in a period of 60 to 240 minutes, the sensor is saturated sufficiently to set off an alarm. Below 35 ppm no alarm will sound. At 150 ppm, the alarm goes off within 10 to 50 minutes. At a level of 400 ppm, the alarm sounds within 4 to 12 minutes. 400 ppm alarm within 4 to 15 minutes.

Safe Home also sells RV carbon monoxide alarms that wire to both 12 volt systems, the coach and the engine, and have a 9 volt battery back-up. The CoStar 12RV-DB 12V RV CO Alarm W/9V Battery Backup protects you even if the 12 volt system is disconnected.

We also sell co alarms by other manufacturers that plug directly into 120VAC outlets. The only problem here is that few outlets are above a child's reach.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Reduce Risks for Employees and Customers from Slippery Floors and Keep Insurance Premiums Lower

by Barbara 31. October 2012 08:39

Question about the need to apply an anti-slip formula like Grip On on concrete and tile floors that are slippery when wet.

Q; " Why do I need to apply an anti-slip formula on the ceramic tile in my auto showroom? I have some indoor outdoor rug strips at the door for people to wipe their feet." Thanks. Warren

Answer: First, common sense says that preventing possible accidents is the best way to act when you have a floor that gets slippery either from moisture from beneath or from floor cleaning machines or feet. Having just returned from a trip to China, I will share my experience in a toll road restroom area. Imagine a huge, as in at least 75 feet by 50 feet area that includes a large tiled entrance plus tile in all the Asian and "American" toilets and in front of all of them. Imagine that all this area is wet with a cleaning solution. Shall I add that I walked very carefully because my feet were sliding? And I was concerned I might slide right into the Asian toilet (at least it was a flush one!).  Secondly, Grip On makes concrete, ceramic, marble, granite, terrazzo, quarry tile, slate, and porcelain tile and bathtubs safer by increasing the coefficient of resistance to slipping and sliding. Yet the treatment is invisible.

Third, read what Safety Seal Products, the manufacturer of Grip On writes:

"Slip/fall accidents are a major problem. The statistics are substantial. After auto accidents, SLIP/FALL ACCIDENTS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF INSURANCE LIABILITY PAYMENTS. In addition, slip/fall accidents, paid for by workerscompensation claims, have greatly increased over the last 10 years.A

As a general rule of law, if an owner or possessor of a premises is aware of a dangerous condition, which could foresee ably harm an invitee and if he has been put on notice that there is a means to prevent such harm, then it could be inferred that should an accident result in an invitee being harmed, the possessor, owner of the property, would be charged with having the knowledge to correct the defective or accident-causing condition. As a result, the owner may be held to a higher standard of care and his probabilities of being held liable, and for damage against him are likely to be greater.

This partial description of negligence is an excerpt from a letter from our corporate attorneys explaining in simple language, if the owner or processor of a building has a dangerous situation (i.e., a floor that is slippery when wet) and is aware that there is a product available at a reasonable cost that can deter that accident-causing condition and he fails to use it, he has a greater chance of being held liable."

So if you want to keep employees and customers safe and keep your insurance premiums down, we suggest you treat that flooring and any other unsealed concrete flooring in bathrooms, work areas, etc. with Grip On.  Application is fast. You need a clean floor, grease free that is unsealed. You need a mop, a bucket and clean water plus the Grip On. The application lasts for 1 to 3 years or more depending upon the location. Never wax that floor or seal it.

Grip on is inexpensive. Buy in 4 ounce, 16 ounce, gallon, 5 gallon or barrel containers.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Questions and Answers About XP3 Deer Avoidance Systems for Motorcycles, Trucks, Cars, Trains

by Barbara 25. October 2012 07:06

Questions about the XP3 Electronic Deer Avoidance Systems.

Q: "I have a friend who has an XP3 Deer Hornet on his motorcycle. I'd like more information before I add one to mine. Please give me information about this system, how it works, etc. Thanks. Tim."

Answer: The XP3 was invented by Otto Jackson after a motorcycling friend hit a deer. Otto has shared several stories with me, even about how he was once riding in Florida and his XP3 hornet kept a runaway bull from hitting his motorcycle. This is information from XP3 about the Hornet. Quantity Discounts Available. Models available for tractor trailer trucks, RV's, Motor Homes, trains, etc.

Q. Is The Hornet a deer whistle?
A. No. The Hornet should not be compared with air activated deer whistles. In the lab and field testing we performed on deer whistles from 1995 to 1998, we found that air activated deer whistles require a minimum of a 48 M.P.H. Direct air flow to produce any measurable sound level. In our opinion, air activated deer whistles have little to no effect on deterring deer/vehicle accidents.
Q. What is The Hornet?
A. The Hornet is a small electrically powered sonic generator which produces a high powered directional sonic wave. This wave can be tracked at 1600 feet and has demonstrated the ability to alert deer and most other animals of an approaching vehicle with sufficient time and distance to avoid deer/vehicle accidents.
Q. What is Wave Variance Tuning?
A. Wave Variance Tuning combines reverberation and reflection of the signal. The sound wave begins to reverberate as it travels through the barrel of The Hornet. The reverberating wave is then reflected off the road surface, creating a virtual sonic echo effect and allowing the sound wave to carry a much longer distance.
Q. Is The Hornet ultra-sonic?
A. The Hornet operates at a fixed frequency of a 5,000 Hz. square wave pattern and uses Sonic Systems' exclusive Wave Variance tuning, which takes a secondary frequency to the 18,000 to 21,000 Hz. range, well within the normal human's hearing.
Q. Can people hear The Hornet?
A. Most animals, including people, hear within the same frequency ranges, although some animals can hear tones several thousand hertz higher. For most people, The Hornet's output falls within the upper end of their range of hearing and is clearly audible. However, some people, primarily older people, have a narrower hearing range and may not be able to hear The Hornet.
Q. When should I use my Hornet?
A. Always use The Hornet when driving in high-risk areas. Remember that deer are most active from dusk until dawn. Always drive with your headlights on in high-risk areas, stay alert and pay attention to the roadside. Be prepared to act quickly at the first sign of an animal. Blow your horn and NEVER swerve into oncoming traffic or attempt to dodge an animal by driving off the road surface.
Q. If I install The Hornet on my vehicle, will I never hit a deer?
A. The Hornet is not a magical device, although it is a highly effective deterrent against deer/vehicle collisions. We estimate, using The Hornet along with driver awareness, will reduce your risk of a deer/vehicle accident by more than 70%. The Hornet was tested on deer accident-prone police and emergency vehicles over a 3-year period with more than 6 million proven accident-free miles before it was brought to market.
Q. Will I hear the sonic wave in my vehicle?
A. You will not hear The Hornet while you are driving or riding. However, you may hear The Hornet when your vehicle is stopped or you enter an enclosed parking structure such as a parking garage. The wave is very directional and will reflect back from any solid object.
Q. Can The Hornet be installed on a motorcycle?
A. Yes. There is a special motorcycle wiring harness available for The Hornet. It consists of a wiring harness with the new weather-tight connector, control switch and inline fuse.
Q. Will The Hornet annoy pets?
A. Like you, pets will be able to hear The Hornet. We recommend you turn your Hornet off while you are operating your vehicle in a confined residential area, campground, etc. Most animals, particularly non-domesticated animals, may react in some fashion to The Hornet.
Q. Will The Hornet bother my cat or dog in the car?
A. No. Just as you cannot hear The Hornet while you are driving, neither will your animals. The Hornet's directional sonic wave is focused ahead of your vehicle.
Q. Can I turn The Hornet on and off?
A. Yes. The Hornet comes with a toggle switch and switch plate to be mounted either underneath your dashboard or in the dash itself. We recommend using the switch so that you may turn The Hornet on when needed and off if you are in a residential area, parking garage, etc.
Q. Why must The Hornet be pointed at the road surface?
A. The Hornet uses the surface of the road as a reflective plane.
Q. Will The Hornet scare the deer away?
A. The Hornet will alert the animal of your approaching vehicle with sufficient time to avoid a costly collision. Deer are a highly skittish animal and will normally react to The Hornet by stopping, looking and listening to determine if they are being threatened.
Q. Is The Hornet hard to install?
A. No. If you are familiar with and can use normal hand tools, you can install The Hornet in 15 minutes or less. If you are capable of mounting driving lights or installing a radio, youcan easily install The Hornet.
Q. Where do I mount The Hornet?
A. The Hornet may be mounted anywhere under the front side of the vehicle where it has an unobstructed, clear view of the road surface. Ideal locations include under the bumper, behind an open pattern grill, on a cross-member, on the radiator shroud, etc.
Q. Can I mount The Hornet inside the car?
A. No. The Hornet is a small sonic generator that produces a very focused wave that must be projected directly ahead of the vehicle for maximum effectiveness. Therefore, it must be mounted outside the vehicle with a clear, unobstructed view of the road surface, facing forward and pointed at a 45-degree angle to the road surface.
Q. If I do not wish to install The Hornet myself, where can I take it for installation?
A. Any car dealership, mechanical garage, or company that installs radios, CB's, fog lights, etc. can install The Hornet within a few minutes.
Q. Will the weather affect The Hornet?
A. No. The Hornet is water-resistant and is not affected by normal high and low temperature conditions. However, The Hornet is not completely waterproof. If it is submerged in water, the driver circuitry can be damaged. In addition, The Hornet should be protected from any direct water flow, such as a high-powered water jet that may be found in a car wash.
Q. When I have my car washed, will it affect The Hornet?
A. No. However, care should be taken to protect The Hornet from any direct water spray into the output barrel using a plastic bag or other simple cover.
Q. Can The Hornet be left on all the time?
A. Yes. However, we recommend using The Hornet primarily in high-risk areas and while driving at night.
Q. What is the effective range of The Hornet?
A. Models V-120 and V-120C have a wave carrying length of 1,700 feet and an effective range of 800 feet. This means that deer will be aware of your oncoming vehicle 800 feet away and, under ideal conditions, will be aware of your vehicle from as far as 1,700 feet away.
Q. What is the life expectancy of The Hornet?
A. The Hornet has proven to be an extremely reliable electronic device. The oldest Hornets have now been in use for five years without failure.
Q. What is the warranty of The Hornet?
A. The Hornet comes with a 90-day limited warranty and a lifetime service policy. If The Hornet fails during the warranty period, the Company will replace it at no cost to you. If The Hornet fails to operate after the warranty period, the Company will repair or replace The Hornet as necessary for a small service charge plus shipping and handling.
Q. Is The Hornet effective on all animals, such as moose, cows, kangaroo, etc.?
A. Not necessarily. The Hornet is very effective with deer due to the fact that deer have extremely keen hearing and are very skittish animals. Deer will hear The Hornet's sonic wave up to 1,700 feet away, allowing them more than ample time to assess where the sound is coming from, determine that there is possible danger, and move away from the road surface.
Q. Can I use The Hornet to keep deer out of my yard?
A. No. The Hornet is effective on a moving vehicle due to the fact that it is an unfamiliar sound to the animal and is not constant. If The Hornet is used in a fixed location, it will be effective for a short period of time until the animal becomes accustomed to the sonic wave.
Q. Will The Hornet affect my vehicle's electrical system?
A. No. The Hornet uses less than 10mA of electrical power, which is less than the dome light in your vehicle.
Q. How do I know if The Hornet is working?
A. Most people will be able to hear the sonic wave when The Hornet is turned on and the vehicle is stopped (with the window rolled down) or parked.
Q. How does the new V-Series differ from the older S-Series?
A. The new Hornet V Models utilize the latest and most reliable electronic technology and do not require grounding to the vehicle chassis. The V Models also come with a 4’ pigtail and a 3.5mm plug which connects to a new wiring harness which is complete with an inline fuse and does not require drilling a hole in the firewall for the control switch.
Q. What is the difference between the models of the V-120 and the V-135 interstate?
A.

The V-120 in black and V-120C in chrome are 120 dB units with a wave carrying length of approximately 1,700 feet. The V-120C Model has the same specifications as the V-120 except it is triple chrome plated which makes it ideal for motorcycles and certain applications where chrome would be wanted.

The V-135 Interstate is a 135 dB unit with a wave carrying length of approximately 2,200 feet. Because of its power and range, the V-135 is designed to be used on interstate highways and rural high-risk areas.

If you have additional questions, let me know and I'll get the answers from Otto. If you care about your life, remember to be alert at all times of deer, moose, elk, etc. and install a Hornet.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Chain Fire Ladders or Emergency Ladders for 2nd thru 6th Stories, Made in USA Safety Products

by Barbara 8. June 2012 07:09

Question about Made in USA escape ladders

Q: "I manage a residence for abused women. Our building is 6 stories high. We do have some fire escapes. However, many of the bedrooms are not near the fire escapes. We are looking for ladders that can be kept under a bed or in a closet for emergency escape in case there is a fire. We prefer to Buy American. Which ladders do you suggest we purchase? Thanks. Beth."

Answer: We recommend the Bold Ladders which are made in the USA by Bold Industries. There are 12 foot, 20 foot, 35 foot and 50 foot ladders.

  • Quickescape 12 foot ladders. Weight: about 15 lbs. Choose from a QuickEscape QFL12SL Emergency Ladder With Sleeves, 12FT or a QuickEscape QFL 12 Emergency Chain Ladder, 12FT without plastic sleeve covering. Note: plastic covering helps to reduce the possibility of tangling. The 12 foot ladder is an Emergency Escape Ladder For the 2nd Floor. The QuickEscape® Emergency Escape Ladder hooks over a window sill for quick escape when other exits are blocked. Place the ladder hooks over the window sill and climb down the ladder to safety.  A portable ladder, the Quickescape ladders are tested to support over 1000 lbs.and fit standard windowsill walls up to 10" thick. There are easy to install or remove standoffs for each rung: standoffs give more stability while allowing flexibility to avoid a variety of wall obstructions or hazards. For example, if there is a lower floor window located directly below the designated egress (escape) window and the path of deployed escape ladder will goe along that wall. For this situation, prepare the ladder in advance by removing the standoffs that would hit the window, thus avoiding breaking the glass. The ladder is made from 18 gauge steel with a 2/0 double loop chain in red and gray. There is a life time warranty.
  • Quickescape 20 foot emergency escape ladders. Weight: about 22 lbs. Each ladder is identical in construction to the Quickescape 12 foot ladders. The difference is that this ladder is made for escape from a 3rd story. Choose either the Quickescape with plastic covering of the chains or the Bold QuickEscape Fire Ladder, No Sleeves, 20FT with plain chains.
  • ResQLadder® Emergency Escape Ladder, 35 feet long. Weight is about 24 lbs. This fire ladder is made for escapes from the 4th floor. Red and white in color, the gauge of the ladder is 18 gauge and 20 gauge. Again the ladder supports up to 1000 lbs. total and has removable stand-offs. Choose from a 35 Ft ResQLadder® Emergency Escape Ladder with plastic covering the chains or Bold FL35 Res Q Ladder, No Chain Sleeves, 35 Feet.
  • ResQLadder® Emergency Escape Ladder, 50 feet long. Weight is about 38 lbs.  This ladder is made for escapes from the 5th through 6th floor. Red and white in color, the gauge of the ladder is 18 gauge and 20 gauge. Again the ladder supports up to 1000 lbs. total and has removable stand-offs. Choose from a 50 Ft ResQLadder® Emergency Escape Ladder with no covering the chains or a 50 Ft ResQLadder® Emergency Escape Ladder with plastic on the chains. Plastic sleeves mean less likelihood of the chain tangling during deployment and more comfortable climbing down.

Remember that along with having escape ladders available, you need to have fire exits marked as well as the locations of the ladders marked. Smoke hoods are often recommended for those who are in rooms without windows with direct access to those with fire ladders. Install and regularly test smoke alarms.

Note: Due to Liability Issues This Product is Returnable Only In Event of a Defect Verified by the Manufacturer.

Thank you for your question. We do discount larger quantities of ladders, smoke hoods and most of our products.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Reasons to Install Sensaphone Remote Monitors Instead of Typical Security Systems

by Barbara 6. January 2012 07:13

Question about advantages of Sensaphone Remote Monitoring Systems over security systems by national or local alarm and security companies.

Q: "We are building a new data center. Our choices are between a national or local alarm and security company with monthly monitoring fees or a Sensaphone system. We want to monitor power, temperature and humidity. We are also concerned about possible water leaks onto the flooring and being able to lower the thermostat in the room if one of the units begins to overheat. Which system do you recommend? Thanks. Bill."

Answer: For a data center, we would recommend the Sensaphone IMS-1000 Internet Remote Monitor, IMS-1002 or Sensaphone IMS-4000 PowerGate2 Outlet Switcher IMS-4302IMS-4000 unit over the Sensaphone Web600 Web-Monitor Alarm, No Land Line Needed. The WEB600 is a great starter solution with accessories like a battery back up, a temperature probe, a zone water detector and a humidity transmitter.  However, when you are talking a larger computer room or data center, you are talking about tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment that keep your business operational 24/7.

Sensaphone Systems offer these advantages:

  • No Monthly Monitoring Fees: you buy the product and programs it to notify directly any employee or employees you choose without the cost of a central service that runs at least several hundred dollars annually.
  • Real Sensor Values: Universal inputs read actual temperature values and more.
  • Battery Backup: Either included or an inexpensive option.
  • Maximum Flexibility: Notifications using custom voice phone calls, emails, faxes, text messages, SNMP traps, etc. Communication is via land phone lines, cell phones, Ethernet or satellite.
  • Remote Access: You can program remotely whether a phone line product, a web-based products or a satellite product.
  • No Dependencies: stand alone solutions mean you get direct communication without a central service, computer or server in the middle.
  • Field Proven in Sensitive Applications: Proven reliability and validity in emergency response materials, military weapons systems, medicines, Homeland security, etc.
  • Innovation: In-house engineering. Three US patents for unique technologies. Constantly working to make products more powerful and easier to use.
  • Easy to Use: Simple, clear set up and maintenance. You don't have to be an electronics genius! Some products like the IMS series even automatically detect the sensor you've connected and configure it for you. The owners manuals are extensive and clear to follow. Telephone technical support is there, unlimited and toll free.
  • Made in the USA:  Yes! Sensaphone is made in Pennsylvania. All engineering design, manufacturing, servicing, testing and support are here in the USA.

For your data center, Safe Home recommends you choose the IMS-1002 model and then choose from the 9 sensors listed:

If a sensor is disconnected, you will get an alert. Each sensor is continuously monitored by the IMS parent unit. Cat-5 jacks and cables make it easier to connect to remote sensors using existing structured cabling.

The data logging includes a time stamped collection of input values that can be viewed and graphed. Plus you will get a detailed event history of user logins, telephone calles, etc. It is possible to add video integration to have an image sent of the condition that tripped the alarm. This is web-based monitoring with a traditional phone line, too.

You can place the IMS-1000 or IMS-4000 into your server rack. There are no moving parts in the IMS-1000 series units: each is complately standalone with its own internal battery back up.

Please contact us if you have additional questions. Thank you for your questions.

  • gauze pads
  • tweezers
  • gauze rolls

You could also purchase the food bars and water packets separately. For example, a good choice would be the Survivor Industries Mainstay 3600 Emergency Food Bars, 90 Bars This package contains 90 food bars that each supply 400 calories. So depending upon the size of the person and his/her activity level, 3 to 6 bars per day would keep this person with proper nutrition. If you were remaining at home,

Mainstay 3600 Emergency Food Bar Key Benefits:

  • 5 year Shelf Life
  • Non-Thirst Provoking
  • Withstands Temperatures of -40° F to 300°F (-40°C to 149°C)
  • Ready to Eat: Each package contains 9 pre-measured 400 calorie meals.
  • Individualized Portions eliminate the messy breaking-up that occurs with other bars
  • Allows for on-land emergency consumption in a high-stress active situation.
  • Contains no cholesterol or tropical oils.

  • Enriched with vitamins and minerals exceeding the RDA requirements.
  • Pleasant lemon flavor which appeals to everyone.
  • Mainstay™ meets the dictates for Halal and is Kosher

I suggest that you either purchase the Survivor Industries Mainstay Emergency Drinking Water Pack, 4.2 Oz, 60/CS or an AquaPod Kit Deluxe Emergency Water Storage Kit. Minimum water requirements for survival are two of the 4.2 ounce packets per day. The AquaPod Kit is unique: prior to losing power from your well, you place this kit in a bathtub and fill it with cold water.

Each Aqua Pod Deluxe Kit Contains:

  • 3 disposable tub liners, each 40 inches by 80 inches. This will fit in a Jacuzzi tub or standard 5 feet tub. An average tub holds 70 gallons.
  • 3 disposable tie clamps to hold the bag to water spigot during the approximate 10 minute time that it takes to fill the bag. (Dependent upon water pressure.)
  • 1 reusable pump with locking system. Locks the pump to the liner bag.

The AquaPod liner is made from FDA approved plastic, i.e. LDPE Plastic (Low Density Polyethylene Plastic). The shelf life is up to 10 years depending upon storage. Made in the USA.

I also recommend you purchase a copy of Wallace Guidebook for Emergency Care and Survival. This inexpensive book may literally save your life.

Thank you for your questions:

Starting a Safety Proofing Business With Anti-Slip Grip-On Solution for Concrete and Tile Floors

by Barbara 20. September 2011 15:00

Question about Grip On Anti=slip Solution as part of a business to safety proof hard surfaced flooring such as ceramic tile, concrete, etc.

Q: "I recently took an early retirement. I read about Grip On and am interested in starting a safety proofing business for slippery floors. Last week I went to a restaurant with ceramic tile that was slippery. Many times concrete outside malls and stores are slick when it rains. And my own garage floor is dangerous when it gets wet. How difficult is Grip On to apply, what would I need to start a business and how would I know what to charge? Thanks. Frank."

Answer: You didn't mention the state or town where you live. My advice is to learn about local requirements for a business and decide if you want a corporation such as a Chapter S. Seeking advice about that from a business attorney and/or local Chamber of Commerce is a great first step. Once you have your business and insurance in place, then it is time to seek out customers who need hard surfaces such as concrete and tile treated to protect their customers and themselves from slip and fall accidents.

The five gallon buckets are probably the most economical way to start. Each bucket treats about 2000 square feet of flooring. Each bucket weighs 50 lbs. When business improves, purchase the  55 gallon drums of Grip On: you can refill the bucket using a pump.  This 55 gallon size will treat about 22,000 square feet of hard surfaces. Ships by truck only: 4 drums can fit on each skid. Approximate shipping cost: $300 per skid with one drum. The shelf life is indefinite: with a good business, you''ll get through this quantity in weeks or days depending upon the square footage you will be covering. The lid of the drum stays on. There are two holes, one 4 inch hole and one 2 inch hole. Purchase a vacuum or hose pump from your local hardware store. (Cost about $15).

What you will need for faster application in addition to the Grip On are:

  • a 20 lb cotton mop
  • a mop bucket with wringer
  • an 18 inch to 24 inch squeegee
  • a wet vac to make removal of dirty and clean water faster
  • a long extension cord for the wet vac
  • a source of clean water
  • a good cleaning solution with degreaser.
  • roller ruler to calculate accurately the length and width of areas to be treated in linear feet.
  • a calculator to determine the square feet to be treated (or a pencil and paper and the ability to multiply!)

As far as what to charge, you need to calculate the cost of the Grip On and pre-cleaning solution based upon the square footage of the project. Next you need to determine what your hourly wage should be based upon the local economy, your overhead (insurance, etc.), how you will be paid (check or credit card) and if there is another individual or company providing the same service in your area. You may be able to see public bids for local municipal buildings and see what the winning bids were.  Certainly $1.00 a square foot might be reasonable in a more rural area while in New York City a reasonable charge might be $2.50 to $5.00 a square foot.

Remember what you are selling is safety. Insurance rates for restaurants, malls, etc. are based on many factors including accident rates. The fewer claims for slip and fall accidents the lower rates those companies will pay.

Slip/fall accidents are a major problem for employers and customers as well as homeowners. Just think of what happens to those in the Northern states who don't deice their sidewalks and someone falls and breaks a leg! The statistics about insurance liability claims are that slip/fall accidents rank second after auto accidents claims., And slip/fall accidents, paid for by workers compensation claims, have greatly increased over the last 10 years.

As a general rule of law, according to Grip On's attorneys, if an owner or possessor of a premises knows of a potentially dangerous condition, which could cause harm and he or she knows there is a means to prevent that harm, the inference is that the injured party would be more likely to hold that owner liable and have higher damage claims. Insurance companies don't like accident claims: keeping business insurance is important. When a company is canceled for insurance, other insurance companies are less likely to insure or will significantly increase premiums due to the risks they see in the future.

Do make sure that you ask each customer for his/her permission to use you and your company as a reference. I suggest a website for your area where you can have customers rate your service and make comments about the change that Grip On made for their hard surfaced flooring such as ceramic tile, glazed brick, marble, polished stone, terrazzo, river rock, concrete, and quarry tile.

Do remember that porcelain bathtubs are still fixtures in many homes, hotels and motels. Applying Grip On means no more tub mats, stick on plastic "fish", etc.

Among customer who use GripOn are:Dr. Phil's House,McDonalds Restaurants, Trump Properties Exxon/Mobil, Burger King Restaurants, Tanasaka Power Plant ,Cities of New York & New Jersey ,City of Los Angeles ,Bureau of Engraving US Government ,Life Care Centers of America, G.L. Homes, Covenant Care of America, Manor Care Nursing Center, Darcy Hall Nursing Center, Boca Raton Rehabilitation, Spring House Manor, Elks Lodges of Florida, VA Hospitals, Delray Racquet and Country Club, Residents of Century Villages, Pete's Five Star Corporation, Cambridge Investment (Burger King), McDonald's Corporation, Marriott's Hotel and Assisted Living, 7-11 Stores ,Wolfe's Restaurant ,Carlucci's Restaurant Corporation, Billotti's Restaurant Corporation, Pompano Pizza, Onaisas Coney Island, Shopping Center Markets, Outback Steak Hous.

I hope this information has been helpful.

Thank you for the question.

California Law Effective July 1, 2011 for Installation of Carbon Monoxide Alarms in All Single Family Homes

by Barbara 27. June 2011 14:13

Question about approved carbon monoxide alarms for use in California.

Q: "Do you sell carbon monoxide alarms on the "List of California State Fire Marshal Approved Carbon Monoxide Alarms"? The law now requires these be installed in every single family dwelling. How quickly can they be shipped. Thanks. Steve."

Answer: Yes, we do sell several approved carbon monoxide alarms. Unless you are ordering a large quantity of units, we ship within 3 business days using either the postal service or UPS.  The Fire Marshall list expires in July 2012.

Costar Models:

Kidde and Kidde Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarms:

If there are other approved Kidde units you would like pricing on, please let us know. We are able to discount larger quantities of these products. Most come in case of 12 or 24 units. Remember you need to install at least one carbon monoxide alarm on each level of your home and one CO alarm in every bedroom where the door is shut at night. Do remember that if you have gas burning appliances like ranges, stoves and furnaces that you also should add gas alarms for propane or natural gas to protect against explosions and fires.

Thank you for bringing this new law to our attention.

Sincerely, Barbara
