Question about IV Wall Hooks.

Q: "I work in a county hospital where we are working to keep down equipment expenditures while making life easier for patients and staff. I see you sell IV wall hooks. Question about keeping TV sets from injuring or killing children using furniture securing devices.

Q:"In the USA Today on February 9, 2012, a news article talked about 4 children killed or critically injured in the Chicago area when TV's fell on them. How can I make sure my children are safe? We have one old style television and a big screen that sits on a table. Thanks. Sara.

Answer: TV's can injure or kill children. Even small sets when knocked off a tall dresser are dangerous. In 2010 or 2011 Consumer Reports recommended ToppleStop furniture and TV straps for securing furniture. Each set of Topple Stops has two straps, one secures to a wall stud on one to the TV set or the stand. One accident was when a TV set sat on a flimsy aquarium stand. TV sets must be on a heavy piece of furniture with slip resistant feet and a low center of gravity. Children also like to pull out dresser drawers and try to clim to the top: a disaster waiting to happen.

So Topple Stops are furniture straps that you attach to the back of solidly set furniture and secure to wall studs behind the furniture. Topple Stops let you anchor appliances and furniture that weighs up to 400 lbs. For items that weigh up to 200 lbs. install a minimum of 1 kit with two point attaching. You need two kits or four point attachment for objects that weigh 200 to 400 lbs. Remember that nothing substitutes for parental supervision.

For metal units, you attach Topple Stop half with an adhesive pad to a dry surface cleaned with isopropyl alcohol (that gets off any residual grease). Then you attach the other half to a wall stud.

For wooden units, the preferred attachment method is using #8 x 1 inch wood screws to attach the fasteners to the frame or the inside edges top or sides of the furniture.

The wall attachment requires using #10 x 2 inch wood screws to the wall studs behind the furniture. If studs are metal, use t-bar anchors to toggle bolts. You can use wall anchors if each has a minimum holding strength of 100 pounds.

Heavy Duty ToppleStop Furniture Fastening System Kit Contents:

  • Two (2) grey Thumb Lock fasteners, 2" long by one wide with 3/4" lock lever. Use with wood screws or 3M VHB adhesive attachment. (Bonding Times: Wait four hours before adding strap. Adhesive fully bonds after 72 hours.)
  • Two (2) 12" long, 3/4" wide grey locking strap with grommet for wood screw attachment.
  • Four (4) #8 x 1" wood screws for furniture attachment    Two (2) #10 x 2" wood screws for wood wall stud attachment.

Thumb lock fastener attaches to locking strap. Fastener can be moved and locked in either direction on the strap. Lift locking lever to "open." Lock fastener on strap by pushing lever down firmly. Note: Thumb Lock adhesive is non-hardening. Fasteners can be removed without damaging surface if slowly and gently pried off with appropriate tool.Suggestion: Install when children are not present, i.e. asleep for the night.

We also recommend Topple Stops for use in day care centers, hotels, motels, etc. to increase safety and reduce liability insurance costs.

It is common understanding that fastened equipment should fare better during jarring movement than equipment that is not fastened, helping to reduce the amount of damage and injury that could result. Q; "I need to safety proof a warehouse. I've looked at various products. I'd like to know the advantages of using a skin urethane foam product rather than standard extruded foam which seems less expensive. Thanks. Thomas."

The main advantages are that this is a sturdy material and quite shock-absorbing and comes in products to meet almost every safety proofing need. Read on for more detail.

The Boing skin urethane products are safe for both commercial and residential uses, having passed or surpassed safety requirements including compression, toxicity, etc. Skin urethane has anti-bacterial properties and passes the ASTM G21 testing. There is no PVC, lead or phthalates in these products.  Although fire retardant, the Boing foam does not meet the current Class A fire codes for fire and smoke retardants. There are many different local, national and international fire codes, each with different property requirements so one product cannot meet all the possible codes.

Skin Urethane is long-lasting. Of course, there are instances where excessive use or aggressive use will reduce longevity. this was desifned as shock-absorbing safety padding to reduce injuries.
Size tolerance of skin urethane is within 5% in the size and density of the finished products. That is because skin urethane is molded, one piece at a time, and can be effected by temperature, humidity, season, weather, etc. Baking lasts about 30 to 40 minutes.

Boing safety pad products are usable indoors or outdoors. All safety padding products are UV treated but over time, like all plastics, there will be some fading. The stronger the sun, the faster the fading occurs. Darker colors fade faster. The impact absorbing qualities are reduced in very cold (below 32 F) and in very hot (over 100F) temperatures. The most UV resistant colors are the primary ones, red, blue, green and yellow. It is best if the product is not exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

Installation: We recommend GE-Silcone I, Silicone II or Silicone II (2X). Also 3M VHD (very high bond) tape is a great option
Aluminum re-inforced strips can be attached with screws (strips are pre-drilled & we provide the screws)

Amount of silicone needed: Varies withe the type of surface to be protected and the degree of adhesion. As a rough estimate, you can generally attach the following numbers with a single 300ml tube:

  • Wall Pad - 2 to 3 wall pads per tube
  • Edge Corner Strip - 6 to 8 edge corner pads per tube
  • Jumbo Corner Guard - 12 to 14 corners per tube
  • Post Pad - 1 to 2 post pads per tube. Remember this product fits only 5 inch diameter poles.

Cleaning and maintenance of safety padding: Use non-abrasive cleaners, normal household cleaning solutions. Permanent markers rarely can be removed.Use around water activities is fine. Do not cut or puncturer. Fasten to clean and dry surface. Chlorinated water will cause discoloration as will that with a high TDS rating.

Boing Brand, the Best Safety Pad Edge Cushion, Pole or Wall Pads for Outdoors

Question about the Wide Profile Black Edge Cushion by Cardinal Gates and the Boing Wide Profile Edge Padding.

Q: "Which of these edge paddings would work the best to protect an outdoor children's play area? There is a rough edged "paver" type wall that is porous. We want to coer it with a black padding to keep children from injuries. Also what is the best way to attach the padding? Thanks, Matt."

Answer: For indoor use, either brand of edge cushion padding will work. The Cardinal Gates padding sticks are the same as used for hearth guard. They come 9 to a box, each pad measuring 48 inches long and 2 3/8 inch x 2 3/8 inch on the lip.The Boing padding is 39.5" long x 2.25" x 2.25" x 1/2" thick.

For outdoor usage, we recommend using the Boing padding. It is made from what is called "skin urethane." That material is a special one-piece foam material which has both a shock absorbing "inner" foam and a  thick outer “skin” to protect from abrasion, UV rays, moisture and bacteria. It is designed for heavy duty use any where that there are sharp or dangerous edges, corners or surfaces. These uses include all types of recreational play areas, manufacturing and commercial, lLogistics and transportation facilities and equipment, military facilities, vehicles and equipment,medical and educational facilities, residential areas, etc.

Skin urethane Characteristics:

  • Safety. It has passed or surpassed a variety of safety requirements including Compression, Toxicity etc. Safety testing documentation available upon request. It has anti-bacterial properties and passes ASTM G21 testing for a variety of bacteria. Our Boing skin urethane products contains no PVC, lead or phthalates.
  • Not Fireproof. Does not currently contain fire and smoke retardants to meet Class A fire codes.
  • Durability: Durable relative to the amount and type of use. It will last many, many years if used in the manner it was designed. Longevity will be reduced by excessive or aggressive use.
  • Size tolerance: Can be up to a 5% variation in the size and density of the finished product. Skin urethane is produced in a mold - one piece at a time. The "baking" forcess that lasts 30-40 minutes can be affected by temperature and humidity which will vary by season and weather variations.
  • UV resistance:  Indoor or outdoor use.  All plastic products, even those that are UV treated, will eventually fade in the sun. The stronger the sun, the faster it fades. The darker the initial color, the stronger it fades. In addition the impact absorbing characteristics are reduced in very cold (below 32F) and very hot (over 100 F) weather. These factors will vary from region to region.
  • Impact absorption: impact absorbing characteristics are reduced in very cold (below 32F) and very hot (over 100 F) weather
  • Best UV resistance:4 primary colors (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow. Best not to expose to direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Standard Adhesive Installing: For most installations, use “GE-Silicone I or II". The "II" version is supposed to be the improved version.
  • High Adhesion Installation: For those locations with a need for very high adhesions, use 3M VHB (Very High Bond tape)
  • Aluminum reinforced strips can be attached with screws (strips are pre-drilled & we provide the screws)
  • How much silicone do you need? The amount will vary with the type of surface to be protected and the degree of adhesion. As a rough estimate, you can generally attach the following numbers with a single 300ml tube:
    Wall Pad - 2 to 3; or
    Corner Strip - 6 to 8; or,
    Jumbo Corner Guard - 12 to 14; or,
    Post Pad - 1 to 2 sets
  • Silicone removal: scraping with a blade or craft knife ior use DAP's Silicone-Be-Gone. Oil-based solvents do require proper ventilation and gloves.Silicone can be removed by scraping with a blade or craft knife, but that can be laborious and isn't always practical.  Instead, try using a solvent that's made to remove silicone.There are a number of solvents on the market, but one of the best is Silicone-Be-Gone, a product made by DAP and developed specifically for removing silicone.  It can be used both for dissolving cured silicone and for cleaning up the area around freshly applied silicone.  The product takes several hours to work completely. It's also an oil-based solvent that has a noticeable odor, so use with proper ventilation.  It's also a good idea to wear gloves to minimize contact with your skin.  Krud Kutter, mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol also work and are safer but take more time and scraping.


Other questions about Boing Safety Pad Products:

  • Can you paint Skin Urethane products? We do not offer "painting" products or services.There are some "water-based" urethane paints to which you add color pigment. You can try, for example SC115 aliphatic polyurethane coating. May require SC-80 water based primer. There is also a solvent based SC89 flexible urethane coating but it requires excellent ventilation and proper protective mask.   • How do you clean and maintain the safety padding?Under normal circumstances, little maintenance is required. Cleaning should be undertaken with normal household cleaning materials that are "non-abrasive". Limit your use of "solvent based" cleaners to the toughest cleaning jobs - follow manufacturers instructions. Unfortunately certain kinds of permanent markers like ballpoint pens and felt pens cannot be completely removed as the ink seeps into the surface layer.
  • Can Skin Urethane padding be used on the floor or under playground equipment?The current shapes we offer are not designed for flooring use. The Wall Guards can be placed on the floor - but are not rated for ASTM 1292 - Safety Surfacing for Flooring.

Accident Prevention with Yellow Safety Padding Products

Question about yellow safety padding products.


Q: "Parts of our warehouse are dimly lit. It is easy to knock against sharp edges of shelving units. There are also supportive poles. What products do you suggest we use to reduce bumps, bruises and other injuries?" Thanks. Tom

Answer: We suggest you safety proof with bright yellow safety padding products. Although we've had several manufacturers use grey safety padding for machinery edges, the yellow is more visible in all lighting and tends to catch one's attention. Schools and day care centers often use the yellow or other vibrant colors such as sky blue, green, etc.


These products are all UV protected, fire resistant or retardant, etc.
