Banister Guard Keeps Children From Falls Thru Balcony Balusters

by Barbara 27. May 2018 12:52

Close call: Condo should have had Kid Shield Banister Guard.

Hard to believe it has been over 13 years since our family ski trip to Copper Mountain, Colorado. My sons, one daughter-in-law, 3 granddaughters, 3 grandsons, one au pair and me. Will never forget the terror in his scream

I spotted the balcony in the 2 story condo rental when we arrived. The youngest grandkids were Will and Alex, then 4 and 2. Already operating SafeHomeProducts.com, I warned the adults to keep an eye on them.I recall it was the second or third day when Will got his head caught between the upright posts of the balcony. Screaming alerted us. We rushed to get him out.  It was then that we realized that  Alex was slim enough to slip through the posts. After that, an adult (and the older children) were on alert. Rather unnerving.

We reported this situation to the rental company. Doubt that any action was taken. The next trip: we rented a single story unit.

Make your home safe! Avoid scares like this one!

Sincerely,

Barbara

Toilet Guardian Keeps Toilet Bowl Water From Overflowing Onto Your Floors

by Barbara 6. November 2013 10:44

Question about best way to keep toilets from overflowing.

Q: "I operate a day care center. The older children toilet themselves; the younger ones have supervision. We have problems with children using too much toilet paper. Then the toilet bowls overflow and there is a mess. What device or devices can we install to prevent these bowl overflows? Thanks. Sara

Answer: The Toilet Guardian TB1000B should save your toilets from overflows. Peace of mind at under $100, no plumber required if you are handy. (The plumber's fee is about the same as the unit in most areas.)

The Toilet Guardian includes a bowl sensor and a controller for an internal valve. When the sensor detects an impending toilet overflow, the sensor signals the controller and the internal valve is closed. This is a great addition to public restrooms, day care centers like yours, private homes, etc..

Battery operated (One CR-2477F Coin Battery), this automatic water shut off valve for the toilet water valve installs easily. Just attach to your existing fill valve at the water connection under the tank. When a potential water problem is detected, you hear the alarm and the water is shut off.

This patented design uses superior Texas Instrument MSP430 technology, replaceable battery (five year life), ceramic disk valve and high impact and chemical resistant materials. Each unit undergoes over 15 function, design and manufacturing tests before shipping.

Toilet Guardian Features Include:

  • No plumber required: easily installed.
  • Twin ceramic disk valves
  • TI MSP430 microprocessor
  • Stainless steel solenoid tested to over 500,000 cycles
  • 3V lithium ion battery w/5 yr. life (replaceable), CR2477F battery
  • Small, light weight, highly impact resistant plastic
  • Size: approximately 3 inches tall by 2 inches wide
  • 0 to 125 psi operating pressure
  • LCD icon display identifies the problem
  • Piezo buzzer for audible alert
  • Two Year Manufacturer's Warranty Against Defects

While you are at it, you should consider installing a Floodstop for your hot water heaters or at the very least a Water Screamer water alarm with 130dB alarm. Water heaters often are in isolated areas. No one knows there is a problem until the water leaks cause damage.

Thanks for your question. Please contact us for more information.

Cardinal Gates Silver Deck Shield Net with 1/2 Inch Mesh Openings for Child Safety

by Barbara 25. April 2012 06:12

Question about the advantages of the Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting over the Cardinal Gates Black Deck Shield Netting

Q: "Why is the silver so much more expensive than the black? Why would installing it be better than the black? Thanks. Tom."

Answer: The silver deck shield netting has a longer life and is less visible on light colored decks or when used to block animals (or children) from pushing between the pickets of fences. Both are easily installed using the wire ties, etc. included with each deck net kit. Both are made from polypropylene plastic and UV protected.

The major differences between the silver and the black deck netting are as follows:

  • Thickness: Silver is substantially sturdier and thicker—more than 7 times thicker than black. Black is approximately 0.26mm thick. Silver is approximately 1.98mm thick.
  • Size of openings: Silver: each "mesh" rectangle measures ½-inch hole size .  Black: each "mesh" rectangle measures about 1.25" x .75".
  • Visibility: silver is even less visible from a distance.
  • Height: 35 inches for black and 36 inches for the silver
  • Can cut with scissors
  • Ideal for homeowner associations
  • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
  • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.

There are two other lengths available.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Advantages of Skin Urethane in Boing Safety Pad Corners, Edge Corner Cushion, Strips, Wall Pad, Etc.

by Barbara 16. November 2010 07:35

Question about the Boing Skin Urethane Foam Padding in Boing Fire Retardant Safety Wall Pad, 31x11.75 In, YELLOW, 4/BX, Boing Pole Pad or Post Pad 5 Inch Diameter - Yellow, Boing Edge Corner Strips-YELLOW, Case of 10 and Boing 3D Jumbo Corner Covers, YELLOW,4/PK.

Q; "I need to safety proof a warehouse. I've looked at various products. I'd like to know the advantages of using a skin urethane foam product rather than standard extruded foam which seems less expensive. Thanks. Thomas."

The main advantages are that this is a sturdy material and quite shock-absorbing and comes in products to meet almost every safety proofing need. Read on for more detail.

The Boing skin urethane products are safe for both commercial and residential uses, having passed or surpassed safety requirements including compression, toxicity, etc. Skin urethane has anti-bacterial properties and passes the ASTM G21 testing. There is no PVC, lead or phthalates in these products.  Although fire retardant, the Boing foam does not meet the current Class A fire codes for fire and smoke retardants. There are many different local, national and international fire codes, each with different property requirements so one product cannot meet all the possible codes.

Skin Urethane is long-lasting. Of course, there are instances where excessive use or aggressive use will reduce longevity. this was desifned as shock-absorbing safety padding to reduce injuries.
Size tolerance of skin urethane is within 5% in the size and density of the finished products. That is because skin urethane is molded, one piece at a time, and can be effected by temperature, humidity, season, weather, etc. Baking lasts about 30 to 40 minutes.

Boing safety pad products are usable indoors or outdoors. All safety padding products are UV treated but over time, like all plastics, there will be some fading. The stronger the sun, the faster the fading occurs. Darker colors fade faster. The impact absorbing qualities are reduced in very cold (below 32 F) and in very hot (over 100F) temperatures. The most UV resistant colors are the primary ones, red, blue, green and yellow. It is best if the product is not exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

Installation: We recommend GE-Silcone I, Silicone II or Silicone II (2X). Also 3M VHD (very high bond) tape is a great option
Aluminum re-inforced strips can be attached with screws (strips are pre-drilled & we provide the screws)

Amount of silicone needed: Varies withe the type of surface to be protected and the degree of adhesion. As a rough estimate, you can generally attach the following numbers with a single 300ml tube:

  • Wall Pad - 2 to 3 wall pads per tube
  • Edge Corner Strip - 6 to 8 edge corner pads per tube
  • Jumbo Corner Guard - 12 to 14 corners per tube
  • Post Pad - 1 to 2 post pads per tube. Remember this product fits only 5 inch diameter poles.

Cleaning and maintenance of safety padding: Use non-abrasive cleaners, normal household cleaning solutions. Permanent markers rarely can be removed.Use around water activities is fine. Do not cut or puncturer. Fasten to clean and dry surface. Chlorinated water will cause discoloration as will that with a high TDS rating.

Thanks for your question. Our most popular products for safety proofing are the yellow ones for obvious visual reasons!

Sincerely, Barbara

Explain How an ID Guard Stamp Works to Protect My Identity on Junk Mail

by Barbara 2. August 2010 12:48

Question about the Kespon ID Guard Stamp PLUS

Q: "I believe in recycling. Shredding credit card offers, utility bills, etc.takes time and makes a mess. I saw the Kespon ID Guard on QVC and wonder how it works. Would it really protect me from identity theft. Please give me more information. How does it differ from, say, a return address stamp. Are there ink pad refills available? Thanks, Susan."

Answer: As Seen on QVC, the ID Guard product uses a specially designed pattern along with a compounded pigment and oil based ink to mask letters and numbers effectively. You can stamp out personal information quietly and cleanly just like you would use a deposit stamp or a return address stamp. The difference is that you are covering an area 1 inch by 2.75 inches or 24 mm by 70 mm with a single push of the top of the stamp.

There are certain papers where this identity guard stamp is not as effective. For example the ink takes a long time to dry on photo paper that is glossy and will leave ink blots on paper that has a rough texture. The ink won't dry on plastic sheets or coated papers. This is a sturdy stamp as the body is made of ABS plastic and POM and both the ink pad and the tray are ABS.

Currently available are the Bright Pink ID Guard Stamp PLUS and the Fluorescent Green ID Guard Stamp Plus. We chose these colors as they are less likely to be confused with the more traditional stamps used to endorse checks and to stamp return addresses. We also carry the small ink pad replacements.

Users are happy not to deal with shredding and the shreds that seem to multiply like flies.

Thanks for your question. Sincerely, Barbara

Comparison of Sunday Afternoons Protective Sun Hats

by Barbara 7. September 2009 04:26

Q: "Dear Customer Service, I have the following questions regarding your hats.

I have the following questions regarding your hats:

1) If I want max sun protection, which one is better:  sunday afternoon adventure hat(GCSDWAHMCS) or sport hat (GCSDWSHLCS)?:
2) What are the materials for the hat? cotton, nylon,..
3) can I machine-wash w/ cold water?  . will the hat shrink if I tumble dry in dryer?
4) How thick are material above top of head:  1 layer?
5) Is there styrofoam insert inside hat if it suddenly rains?
6) Do you have picture of back of hat?
Thanks. Howard"

Answer: Thank you for your question. No one has before asked us to compare them. I have the Adventure Hat, have had it since 2001 when it was available only in California at a few places. I got the one with the scarf and quickly removed it as I found it a bother. The hat is so lightweight you hardly know you are wearing it.

Here are quick answers to your questions in bold.
1)  If I want max sun protection, which one is better:  sunday afternoon adventure hat(GCSDWAHMCS) or sport hat (GCSDWSHLCS)?: the Adventure Hat covers more of your neck, ears.
2) What are the materials for the hat? cotton, nylon,...100% nylon
3) can I machine-wash w/ cold water?  No, handwash. will the hat shrink if I tumble dry in dryer? The nylon won't. However the styrofoam might crumble. Machine drying is not recommended. not advised.
4) How thick are material above top of head:  1 layer? 2 layers except for the mesh vents. Both hats are lined. That and the tight weave are what give the hats the sun protection.
5) Is there styrofoam insert inside hat if it suddenly rains? styrofoam insert is to keep the hat floating if it blows off while you are canoeing. It won't keep your head dry.
6) Do you have picture of back of hat?  unfortunately, we don't have a picture of the back of the hat. You can get a good idea by going to these webpages and taking a look at the sides.

Unless noted, these are features of both hats:
  • 100% Nylon construction except for decorative braid (none on the sport hat)
  • 2 layer constructions:  nylon lined with a darker fabric to help protect eyes and make vision more comfortable.
  • 50 UPF (Mesh vents not rated).
  • 2 mesh vents, one on each side of the hat
  • Wide brim to protect the face. The Adventure hat has a 4 inch flexilbe brim. The Sport Hat brim is also 4 inches and tapers over the ears and overlaps the 5 inch neck veil.
  • Neck veil: Adventure hat has a 7.5 inch neck and ear veil with a grip tape on the veil so you can shorten it off the neck.. Sport hat veil covers only the neck and is 5 inches long.
  • Moisture wicking sweatband
  • Portability: the Sport hat is a smaller profile, easier to pack,
  • Sport hat: 2.2 oz, Adventure hat: 3 oz.
  • Sizing hole in the back of sport hat for pony tails.
  • Handwash cold, line dry, no iron care
  • Chin strap with cord lock to keep hat from blowing away.
If you plan to wear the hat for golf or tennis, I recommend the sport hat as the larger brim of the Adventure hat may block your vision.

Thanks for your question.
Sincerely, Barbara

50 UPF Sunday Afternoons Hats Mean No Sunscreen Drips Into Eyes

by Barbara 10. June 2009 11:08

Question about effectiveness and comfort of SundayAfternoons Hats versus using sunscreen on your face.

Q: "I am a native Floridian and have paid my dues over the past 10 years as I have skin cancer after skin cancer removed from those many years outside in the sun. Now I never go outdoors unprotected: I apply heavy duty sunscreen after every morning shower. If I perspire a lot, the sunscreen drips into my eyes which is uncomfortable at best. Do you have personal experience with the Sunday Afternoons sunhats? How effective are these sun hats at keeping my face, ears and neck safe from the sun? Would I still need sunscreen on my face?" Thanks. Gail

Answer: Yes I do have personal experience with the Sunday Afternoons hats and had one skin cancer removed from my forehead two years ago. (Who wore sunscreen in the 40's, 50's and 60's?) After day one in Hawaii in October 2008, I concluded I would wear my Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat (bought in Palm Desert, CA in 2003 at the encouragement of a friend) and not wear sunscreen. (I had a miserable day one due to the sunscreen dripping into my eyes and ended up dumping bottled water on my face to try to wash them out on three occasions.)

I was surprised that I didn't even need my sunglasses most of the day as the darker underside of the hat plus the large brim shaded my eyes . Indeed, these hats are light weight and give 360 degree solar cover from both UVA and UVB rays. In fact the hats were awarded an unprecedented 13 point utility patent fro sun protection. Except for the mesh ventilation inserts, the hats are rated at 50 UPF which is the highest rating given for clothing for ultraviolet protection against solar rays.

The unisex adventure hat and the Sunday Afternoon sports hats are our more popular sellers.

The adventure hat has these features:
# Rear sizing tape for custom fit.
# Hook and loop closure raises veil off neck
# Moisture wicking sweatband
# Down sloped 4 inch brim is flexible and shades entire face.
# Chin strap with cord lock
# 7.5 inch veil for neck and ears.
# Foam core brim floats.
# Dark underside of hat for eye comfort.

The unisex sports hat is similar. Other styles are available and all come in a variety of colors.

Thanks for your question. Stay safe in the sun!
Sincerely, Barbara.

Attaching Rupture Proof FloodChek Washing Machine Hoses

by Barbara 22. November 2008 06:55

Question about using the FloodChek Washing Machine Hoses and the Product Code: =SM-FC-Gooseneck2. Gooseneck Connectors.

Q: "My washing machine sits fairly close to the wall. I'm concerned that the Floodcheck washing machine hoses are too stiff to install correctly. Can I attach these gooseneck connectors to the back of the machine so that the hoses do not stick straight out, and then attach the hoses to the free end?" Thank you. Howard.

Answer: Yes, the purpose of the goosenecks to provide an angle so the hoses do not stick straight out. We recommend the gooseneck connectors when space is tight for installation. Some customers must install two sets, one on the water supply pipes and one on the washer, to be able to use these rupture proof hoses. Floodchek hoses come in 5 feet and 7 feet lengths, have sturdy brass connectors and are guaranteed for 20 years. If you have a steam dryer, we do sell single hoses as well. Reduce the risks of water damage further by adding a FloodStop Automatic Water Valve and Alarm for Washers, FS3/4H-90 that will turn off water if the machine itself leaks, not an uncommon occurrence.

We also recommend that you add either local water alarms or a unit like the Floodstop washing machine water shut off valve with sensors. The reasons are that sometimes a slow water leak develops under a washing machine that has nothing to do with the hoses themselves. Slow leaks ultimately cause expensive repairs.

Our suggestions for water alarms are:

1. The Flood Detective: The only water alarm that features AC operation with battery back-up. 92 dB alarm. The water sensors detect water at a depth of 1/32", are wafer thin for use under carpets or small spaces and have adhesive strips to keep sensors firmly in place. Flood Detective's fail-safe technology informs you of A/C power loss or low battery levels. 8 foot cord on each sensor. Daisy chain additional water sensors to expand coverage of a single Flood Detective water alarm unit. Multi-sensor Capable: one water alarm can monitor multiple sensors. (Maximum of 5 is recommended for easier location of water leaks.) 7 year warranty.

2.The Gizmode Water Alarm : This is a battery only water alarm with a very loud alarm: Sounds at 110+ db for up to 72 hours. Construction: Sturdy ABS plastic outer shell with 4 stainless steel sensors. Powered by a single 9 volt battery (not included) Low battery warning. Tip resistant. Moisture Sensors: Sensitive to low moisture levels. Standing water not required. Stainless steel sensors: Will not corrode nor stain. Sensor contacts sink deep into carpet, thus detecting the first signs of moisture below the carpet's surface. Size: 3" Diameter x 3" Tall. Takes up minimal space. Optional Sump Pump or Water Overflow Attachment. (Sold Separately). 1 year warranty.

3. The Water Screamer Stand Alone Water Alarm, 130 dB Alarm: This is an extremely loud stand alone water alarm and moisture alarm. Remember that a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm is 85 decibels. Use this in basements, near toilets, under sinks, near water heaters, etc. Powered by a single 9 volt battery, the Water Screamer by Gizmode is 4.5 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches tall. There are four stainless steel probes. Use on carpeting or hard flooring. This is a great unit for crawl spaces, condo complexes, etc. Avoid thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage plus inconvenience by using a Water Screamer that you can hear through walls!

Thanks for your question.

Can Deck Netting Be Used to Childproof a Balcony?

by Barbara 12. July 2003 09:39

Adrienne asks: "Can you use outdoor deck netting i.e. Deck Shield Netting or Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Nettingto block the open area between the balcony top railing and the roof of the balcony to keep a child from falling over the balcony? If not, do you know of a product made to prevent falls from over a balcony railing?"

Dear Adrienne,

No, outdoor deck netting would not work in your application. Deck Shield is durable, weather-resistant polypropylene plastic netting, UV protected. Cable ties and eye screws provided to attach the mesh netting to deck posts and to the deck surface. Without permanent supports attached to the balcony roof and the top railing, this netting could not safely block that opening.

One way to childproof that area would be to have a carpenter install a sturdy frame in that area. Safe Home Products sells both removeable Guardian Angel and John Sterling brand window guards that can be installed vertically inside that frame to protect that dangerous opening. If this was an exterior balcony above the 6th story, window guards need to be permanently fixed as most fire truck ladders don't extend above the 6th story. One customer had a similar frame installed along with Guardian Angel guards to childproof an interior balcony overlooking her family room.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara
