Question about safety issues when converting from oil heat to gas heat.

Q: "A natural gas shale line from Marcellus Shale gas in Pennsylvania may extend into the Northeastern states in the next year, if approved (Quote from CBS 12/3/2014) We currently are using oil heat. Replacing the furnace with natural gas will save us a lot of money. How can we avoid the health risks associated with natural gas?"Thanks Tom.

Answer: Continue using carbon monoxide alarms and smoke detectors as you have been doing, remembering to test them monthly and change batteries once a year. I would also suggest you add a Scentry III Gas Shut Off system on your main line into the home as well as Safe-T-Alert Combustible Gas Alarm or a Safety Siren III natural gas alarm near your natural gas appliances such as ranges, fireplaces, etc.

With the Scentry III GFRAB, you can add additional remote sensors, a battery back-up and a connection to a home monitoring system if you have one or plan to get one.

Remember that natural gas is lighter than air and "puddles" at the ceiling above the appliance using it. If near an open stairway, the gas will go to the top of the stairway.

An annual furnace tune up with filter change is needed with gas furnaces as well as with oil. If you want the best disposable furnace filters, use the 4 inch or 1 inch Safe Home filters.

Extending Sensor And Valve Shut Off Wires on FloodStop Water Heater Device

Question about the Water Heater FloodStop with 3/4" valve FS3/4NPT and extending the length of the sensor and valve shut-off wires.

Q: "I purchased a Water Heater FloodStop with 3/4" valve FS3/4NPT. How far can the controller be located away from the shut off valve? 25 feet? Can I splice the controller to shut off valve wire and add 20 feet? Can I splice the sensor wire and add 30 feet? Thanks for all your help, Jerry"

Answer: Yes, you can extend the length of both wires. The controller can be located at any distance, so 25 feet is no problem. You can do this by splicing in a similar gauge paired wire as you suggested, or you can purchase our Controller to Valve Extension Wire, which is about 8 feet long. If you ordered 4 of them and simply plugged them into each other, you would not have to go buy wire or do any splicing.

You can splice into the sensor wire and extend it by 30 feet no problem. Or you can add Floodstop Individual Water Appliance Additional Water Sensor XS-01 unitsthat each have a 3 foot long wire and interconnect to give you more water sensor coverage. We do not have a controller to sensor extension wire, as the customized length can be so varied that the manufacturer did not create one.

Extending the sensor and valve shut off wires of all the individual FloodStop automatic water sensor and automatic valve shut off devices can be done in a similar fashion.

UL and CSA Require RV CO and Propane Gas Alarms Stop Working in 3-5 Years

Question about life span of carbon monoxide and propane monitor/alarms in RV's and trailers.

Q: "My RV has the original carbon monoxide and propane monitors. When should I replace them? Thanks Tom."

Answer: Safe Home recently learned that all newly manufactured 12V propane alarms and carbon monoxide alarms, whether combination alarms or single alarms, must include an internal shut-down system. The Safe-T-Alert brand we sell has an internal warning system that beeps and flashes when the sensor is dying and then beeps and flashes when the unit shuts down from sensor failure. Typical life is 3 to 5 years unless the sensors are exposed to aerosols such as spray deodorants, cooking sprays, cleaners, etc. Note the date of installation on the outside of the unit with a sticker or log into your owner's manual so you won't be awakened in the middle of no where with the bad news that your units are or have failed.

Below is the information we received from Safe-T-Alert in April 2012 to share with customers.

CARBON MONOXIDE & PROPANE ALARM REPLACEMENT NOTICE: Note to Customers:

All Safe-T-Alert Propane and Carbon Monoxide Alarms that are 5 years old and older are beyond their Mandatory Replacement Time and MUST be replaced.

Background: Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL®) Carbon Monoxide Standard UL 2034 and Canadian Standards Association (CSA®) CSA 119.2 now require that all Carbon Monoxide alarms be designed to stop service in 3 to 5 years . UL and CSA have determined that Carbon Monoxide alarms have a limited life. Propane alarms use similar sensors and UL will require the same service life in the near future.

ALL MTI Propane and Carbon Monoxide alarms which are over five (5) years old MUST be replaced. The following Safe-T-Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarm Models MUST be replaced: SA-4, SA-5, 50-541 and 50-542. Models 60-541 and 60-542 over five (5) years old MUST be replaced.The following Safe-T-Alert Propane Alarms Models MUST be replaced: SA-7 and SA-8. Models 30-441,30-442, 40-441 and 40-442 that are over five (5) years old MUST be replaced.

Important! Only install CO and Propane alarms that are UL or CSA listed for Recreational Vehicle Use.

Safe-T- Alert Replacement RV Carbon Monoxide Alarms for a CCI Controls 3400.0 or 3400.094.

Question about which Safe-T-Alert CO alarm replaces the CCI 3400.0

Q: "Hello,I am trying to replace this item for a customer. They currently have a CCI Model No. 3400.0. Which of yours would replace this model?Thanks so much Tammy."

Answer: The replacement units for the CCI Controls 3400.094 carbon monoxide alarms for RV's are the Safe-T-Alert SURFACE MT 12V RV/CO Alarm BROWN, 65-541 or the Safe-T-Alert 65-541 SURFACE MT 12V RV CO Alarm WHITE.

These are both surface mount units.The update to 65 has to do with the 5 year warranty from date of sale. All units should be replace every 5 years.

The good news:  Safe-Alert typically has a summer rebate program ranging from $10 to $20, a true incentive to replace aging units. In 2013 this rebate ends in September.

Question about carbon monoxide alarms.

Q: "I am looking for a replacement for my current battery powered carbon monoxide alarms. Our cabin is rather primitive, no running water, electric only via a generator and no furnace. When we go there in cold weather, the inside temperature can be at or just above freezing. Which unit do you suggest? Thanks. Tom.

Answer: The best choice for your needs is the CoStar 9V Battery UL Home and RV Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Unless it gets below 40 degrees below zero or above 151 degrees, this is what you need. We sold these when astronauts were doing training in Alaska many years ago.

Safety Alarms Needed to Protect Home Recently Converted to Natural Gas Heat and Water Heater

Question: "We recently converted to natural gas heat and gas hot water boiler. We have two floors above this basement installation. What safety alarm units are required for protection? Nate.

Answer: Thanks for your question for the Ask Barbara Contest, Nate. I am going to answer with the assumption that your home was all electric prior to this conversion. If you heated with propane or oil, some of these recommendations may not apply.

Natural gas homes or businesses need two different types of safety alarms.

Combustible Gas Alarms.

Why do I need a combustible gas detector/gas alarm?

The purpose of a combustible gas alarm is to alert you when you have a raw gas leak. Yes, mercaptan is added to natural gas to make it smell like rotten eggs. But if you are not in the area of the gas appliances and/or you do not have an ability to smell, the odor does you no good. This units must be installed near the gas using appliances. So if your gas furnace and gas water heater are side by side, one natural gas alarm is all you need.

  • No matter how good your nose is, you may not be in the right place at the right time to notice a natural gas or propane leak.
  • Carbon monoxide alarms give NO protection against combustible gas leaks. carbon monoxide sensors detect only carbon monoxide, not raw fuel.
  • Turning off a light, setting a security alarm or closing a door spark a gas explosion or fire. Natural gas leaking from a basement furnace can leak upstairs through hollow walls.
  • Gas can leak into homes via sump pits, inbound water lines or a natural gas well under your home.
  • Each gas appliance is a potential source of a gas leak. Each gas appliance needs its own gas detector
  • We sell two different models with gas specific sensors. These are the Safe-T-Alert Model 40-411-120 and the Safety Siren Pro Gas Alarm; The main differences between the units are how they are installed.

    To properly install the Safe-T-Alert you need an electrical outlet near to the gas appliances. Because this unit has a line cord that is approximately 65 long, mounting ths unit properly is usually less a problem that the direct plug-in Safety Siren. Raw gas detection units must be mounted within 6 inches of the ceiling or on the ceiling at least 12 inches from a wall for natural gas leak protection. Natural gas pools above the appliance: think of an upside down pothole filling with water and you get the picture.

    The Safety Siren requires an electrical outlet near the appliance. Many people choose this option because the Safety Alert unit has a safety tab through which an outlet screw goes. This means the unit cannot be removed from a standard, single screw, double outlet without removing the screw.  These units meet the UL1484 standards for combustible gas alarms.

    Note: UL 1484 listed combustible gas detectors are not detectors for minute gas leaks. Sensors and detectors are tested in a combustible gas environment and meet the UL 1484 standards for alerts of dangerous gas levels. Deliberate exposure to natural gas, butane, propane, etc. can destroy the sensor in this unit. Use the test button to test this unit, not exposure to raw gas.

    Carbon Monoxide Alarms:

    One product of natural gas and all fossil fuels like coal, wood, peat, etc. is carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas. If your furnace and water heater are working properly, carbon monoxide is vented outside. If the vents are not working properly due to obstructions or the furnace heat exchanger cracks, then carbon monoxide is discharged into the air. Unlike combustible gasses, carbon monoxide does not pool but is distributed throughout your air. Carbon monoxide exposure symptoms range from flu-like symptoms to brain damage to death from asphyxiation.

    Recommended at a minimum are carbon monoxide alarms in or outside every bedroom, near the gas appliances and at the top of stairways. The easiest to install are the 9 volt battery units. Believe the alarm even if it sounds intermittently. About 5 years ago, I went to visit my parents in Pennsylvania. They have a washer and gas dryer in their kitchen (since 1952). I noticed that the Costar 9 volt CO alarms were all off their mounts (there were three units total). I was told they were "defective" as they were going off intermittently. I took them home with me and sent them to Quantum Group to be tested. Dave from Quantum phoned and said nothing was wrong with them! Meanwhile, my elderly father did NOT install the plug in Safe-T-Alert unit I had sent them because "I didn't know where to put it." The problem was the vent for the gas dryer was partially clogged with lint!  Since then, local code has changed: their 4 inch diameter gas dryer vent had to be replaced with a 5 inch for the newest dryer to be installed this past year.

    Types of Carbon Monoxide Alarms:

    If you are really concerned about a gas leak, we recommend the Scentry III gas valve shut off systems. Choose from a Scentry III GFRAB LP/Natural Gas Detector Valve Controller with remote sensor capability and a battery back-up option feature or a Scentry III SFGVC Automatic Gas Valve Controller, No Gas Valveunit with a single sensor at the gas valve itself. Scentry units are made in the USA. They do require a special diaphragm type gas valve in 1/2, 3/4 or 1 inch size, a 24 volt power supply and 120VAC or 240VAC power.

    Also install and maintain your smoke alarms which I am sure you already have.

    FloodStop Automatic Water Valve and Alarm for Dishwasher, Toilet or IceMaker

    Question about the Floodstop 3/8 Inch Automatic Water Shut-Off and Alarm.

    Q: "Water is seeping through the floor under my dishwasher. Right now there is just a small wet spot. My basement is to be finished this winter so I want to protect the house from water leaks from the dishwasher, toilets, etc. if I can. I see that you have a device that would shut off the water to the dishwasher and sound an alarm if the new dishwasher (to be installed soon) leaks in the future. How complicated is it to install the valve? What other units are available? Thanks. Tom"

    Answer: My suggestion is to have the appliance store deliver the new dishwasher and have their plumber install the Floodstop at the same time. Check your local tax laws. Currently, at least in Iowa and in Pennsylvania, you don't pay sales tax on the appliance if the store delivers the unit and does the installation. Depending upon your locale, the additional plumbing charge may be $50 and up. The protection is worth it.

    Most dishwashers are next to a sink since they use the sink drain. The plumber would install one or more water sensors on the floor where the dishwasher will be placed (we recommend a minimum of two), the water valve, attach the alarm valve turn off unit to the wall (probably under your sink), and plug in the unit. The sensors should be tested by wetting them. After they are dried and the water valve is reset, then the dishwasher is installed.

    The FloodStop unit for dishwashers and toilets has a 3/8 inch compression valve that connects to the angle stop and the supply line. You do need electricity unless you plan to change batteries at least once per year. (The unit draws power only to open or close the valve.) For AC, use the 4 C batteries, not included, as back-up. Contacts allow the option of connecting to phone dialers, alarm systems, X10 home automation devices, etc. There is also a 9 foot controller valve extension cord available to allow mounting of the controller in a more or less visible location. The length of cord included with Flood Stop leak detection alarms is 2.5 feet.Transformer extension wires are also available.

    We also sell Floodstops for water heaters, washing machines that does not require a plumber, sinks, icemakers with 1/4 inch lines etc. All units have a one year warranty by the manufacturer. We've had customers literally saved from flooded homes from these units especially from leaking washers and water heaters.

    Floodstop Dishwasher, Toilet and Ice Maker Unit Information:

    * The FloodStop valve is connected to the angle stop and supply line

    * Water/leak sensor is placed at the base of the appliance or fixture (Dishwasher; Sink; 3/8" Icemaker; Toilet; etc.)

    * Valve stays open until water loss is detected

    * Water on sensor closes FloodStop valve and sounds alarm * Valve stays closed until problem is attended to and system is reset

    Safe-T-Alert STA-35-742, STA-30-441 or STA-30-442 Replace CCI 7770 and 7773 Series RV Propane Alarms

    Question about the Safe-T-Alert RV Propane Gas Alarms, Models 35-742, 30-441, 30-442 and 70-742

    Question: "The CCI propane alarm in my RV needs replaced. I've just learned CCI is no longer in business. What are my options? Thanks, Tony."

    Answer:  CCI closed down in February 2009.

    To determine which unit you need, you need first to answer this question: Do you have a unit that shuts off the propane gas valve if there is a leak or is yours a propane gas alarm without an automatic gas valve shut-off?

    For a unit that has a gas valve shut off, you need a 70-742-R Kit which is available in white, brown or black. This kit includes the solenoid valve. Do not connect the Safe-T-Alert to any other valve or you risk a fire. These units replace the 7719.04 and 7719.7.

    For a recessed or flush mount propane alarm only, the recessed propane gas alarm model 30-442 in brown, white or black fits the CCI LP Gas Alarm Cut Out (7770 series) for Flush Mount Models. These can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

    For a recessed or flush mount propane alarm only, you can add a carbon monoxide alarm and propane gas combination unit, the recessed 35-442 in brown, white or black fits the CCI LP Gas Alarm Cut Out (7770 series) for Flush Mount Models. These can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

    For a surface mount propane alarm only, the 30-441 in brown and white replaces the CCI LP Gas Alarm 7770 surface mount series These can be mounted vertically or horizontally.  You can also get additional protection with a Safe-T-Alert 35-541, now available in black or white . This unit combines a propane gas alarm with a carbon monoxide alarm, all in the same case for economy of space.

    For a combination carbon monoxide and propane gas alarm, choose the 35-542 recessed unit in brown , 35-542 recessed unit in white or the special order 35-542 recessed combination unit in black. The cut out is the same as the CCI 7700 series cut-out and identical to the Classic Series 30-442-P Safety Alert models.

    Note: Some CCI units in Fleetwood or Winnebago RV's have two power leads, i.e. three wires. The Safe-T-Alert 30 and 35 series units have only one power lead. Connect the red power lead to the coach power supply and cap or remove the other power lead. Use butt connectors to replace any unit with spade connections.

    Replacing 12V Propane Gas Alarms in an RV or Trailer

    Question about replacement 12 volt propane gas alarms for a motorhome.

    Q:" How do I choose the correct 12 volt propane alarm for my motor home? The brand that was in my motorhome is no longer available?" Thanks. Joe

    Answer: Currently, we are selling Safe-T-Alert propane alarms, USA manufactured, that meet all RV standards. Unfortunately, we are unable to locate a manufacturer that sells a unit with the third wire, that one that closes the propane gas valve if a leak if detected.

    Choose a unit by answering these questions:

    Is the current propane alarm mounted flush with the wall? If so, measure the opening. The units we sell are:

    • 30-442 (Flush Mount)Case Dimensions:6.375"W x 2.875"H x 1"D
    • 40-442RV Flush Mount Gas Alarm: Case Dimensions Recessed portion = 3"H x 4"W. Depth = 1 1/8". Flush mount portion = 4"H x 4 7/8"W. Screw Holes = centered, 4 1/2" apart.

    Is the current propane alarm surfaced mounted, ie. not flush with the wall?

    • 30-441 (Slim Line Surface Mount): Case Dimensions: 6"W x 1.875"H x 1.5"D
    • 40-441RV Case Dimensions: Bottom (where mounted) = 3"H x 5 3/8"W. Top = 3"H x 5"W. Depth = 1 3/8". Screw holes = centered, approx. 5" apart.

    Do you want a brown unit?

    • 40-442A-BR is chocolate brown and a flush mount. The 40-441A-BR is the corresponding surface mount unit.
    • The 30-441A=BR is the chocolate brown surface mount propane alarm and the 30-442A-BR is the chocolate brown flush mount model.

    What is the maximum amp draw you want?

    • Both the 40-441 and 40-442 draw 46 milliamp (0.046 amp.)
    • The 30-441 and 30-442 draw 76 mA. This 30-442 can replace the CCI-7770 Propane Alarm that is discontinued.

    The warranties are longer on the 40 series units. If you are interested in the product manuals, we have them listed below the pictures of each product.

    I hope this helps answer your question. We do recommend that you test your propane alarms and your RV carbon monoxide alarms at least once per month.

    Will a Radon Detector Detect Outgas from Granite?

    Queston about the SM-RAD-PRO3 Safety Siren Pro 3 Radon Gas Detector.

    Q: " Will this detect radon outgassing from granite countertops? Thanks. Diane.

    Answer: First, here is some information found on August 6. 2008 on the Marble Institute of America's website: "Radioactivity in Granite: It’s Natural. All rocks have a small amount of radioactivity in them due to the presence of minerals that contain radioactive elements uranium (U), thorium (Th) and potassium-40 (40K). Because granite typically contains more of these elements than most other rocks, it will be more radioactive than a slate or marble. All of the minerals in granite contain some radioelements; the white or pink feldspars contain 40K, the black biotites and horn-blendes contain 40K, U and Th, and the small inclusions of minerals such as zircon, apatite, sphene, etc. contain the most U and Th."

    My response to your question is that the outgassing of radon from granite countertops would have to be significant to put enough gas in your kitchen or bathroom to be a health hazard. Installing the Safety Siren Pro 3 in rooms with granite countertops would detect outgas from granite just as it would radon seeping in from the ground.

    The health risks are much higher from radon seeping into your basement or home from the ground. If you live in the Northern half of the USA or in areas designated on the EPA radon map of the USA as high radon areas, your concern should first be to test your basement or first floor if you have a crawl space for radon. The Safety Siren Pro 3 Radon Gas Detector has proven to be quite accurate if positioned at the proper height and in the proper location.

    Home radon gas levels are not stable. Over a one-month period, radon gas readings can vary from safe to dangerous. Radon levels change due to humidity, temperature, ventilation and season. EPA currently recommends corrective action if radon levels exceed 4 pCi/L (4 Pico-Curies per liter) on a long-term basis. For these reasons, a continuous monitor is better than periodic canister tests.
