Protect Sharp Corners of Exterior Metal Posts With UV Treated, Anti-Bacterial, Molded Foam Basic Corner Strips

by Barbara 7. January 2013 10:58

Question about how to safetyproof metal square posts in a Headstart playground area with Boing yellow corner strips

Q: "The director of my Headstart Program wants to protect children in our playground from (16) sixteen 90 degree angle square metal posts. He wants each post protected at least 48 inches from the base of each post. Four metal posts are 4 inches on a side. The other 12 metal metal posts are 3 inches on a side. What do you suggest? Thanks. Helen from Texas."

Answer: After reviewing all the options, I phoned my manufacturer. The only option is to purchase the Basic Corner Strips, cut them and stack them to the appropriate height. These are "Skin Urethane" molded foam strips with a shock absorbing "inner" foam and a thick outer “skin” to protect from abrasion, UV rays, moisture and bacteria.

Polyurethane is a completely self-skinning polymer that is stain-resistant, puncture-resistant and remarkably easy to clean. It resists staining caused by grease, chemicals, waste products, and other liquids, and can be cleaned as easily as a countertop. Polyurethane is naturally antibacterial/antimicrobial and odor-resistant, making it ideal for clean room environments.

Each shape of protective padding or protective corners is made to specific dimensions and baked in a mold for 30-40 minutes. This basic corner strip is currently available in yellow, red, green, blue, orange and ivory. The primary colors are the most popular for safety proofing, especially the yellow. Black and grey are usually available. At this writing, January 7, 2013, neither is available.

I suggest you purchase the case of 25 yellow as you need at least 20 and this is the most economical way to buy. Each stick is 39.5 inches long (39.4 inches on the inside) by 2.25 inches by 2.25 inches and 1/2 inch thick. Cut the sticks to stack them the height that you want. Put the cut side at the bottom and use silicone to seal that edge when you cut these lengths to stack to the 48 inches that your director wants: then water and moisture do not effect the strip. These strips are made to be installed either inside or outside. You need a minimum of 20 strips to cover the 48 inches. This product covers the sharp corner edges of the 90 degree angle posts. There is no product to will "fill in" the missing space.

Using Wider Fire-Resistant, Impact Absorbent Edge Cushion and Corner Pads as Work Safety Products

Questions about Gray Kids Edge Hearth Guard 54 Inch Pad Sticks and Gray Hearth Guard 7 Inch by 7 Inch Corners and Boing Edge Corner Strips (Pack of 4) -GREY

Q: "I am in charge of maintenance and safety in a factory that makes boxes and other packaging products. There are many sharp edges on railings, assembly lines, etc. We need wider corner and edge cushions due to the size of the edges. Are either of these products suitable? How difficult is it to install?

Answer: Both lines of product are fire-resistant, non-toxic and easily applied with contact cement if you prefer not to use the adhesive tape on the Kids Edge products. Boing recommends only the GE-Silicone I brand rubber silicone cement. A long sharp knife like a fillet knife is recommended for the cleanest cut. Lubricating the entire length of the knife with soapy water or liquid soap, then moving the knife back and forth with the blade straight will give the cleanest cut.

Gray and yellow are the more popular colors for industrial usage. If you have poles that require padding, we recommend the Boing Yellow Pole Pad if your poles have a 5 inch diameter. This brand has two halves that connect. Each half is 19.5 inches long and .5 inches thick. The other choice is the Kids Edge yellow padding which is 48 inches high and has an interior diameter of 2 1/8 inches. Two pieces can be wrapped about a pole and pieces can be added to fit. There are also matching yellow corners and wall padding for the Boing products.

If you have a bigger project, we now offer quantity pricing on all 36 inch lengths of wide profile extruded foam edge padding. For example, choose the Kids Edge Cushion Pad Large Profile 2 3/8 Inches x2 3/8 Inches x 36 Inches in Black, 48/Box or purchase gray, taupe, brown or ivory in the 48 piece or 100 piece boxes. This product is made in the USA and usually ships within 5 business days or less.

Thanks for your question. Let us know if we can help further.

Accident Prevention with Yellow Safety Padding Products

Question about yellow safety padding products.

Q: "Parts of our warehouse are dimly lit. It is easy to knock against sharp edges of shelving units. There are also supportive poles. What products do you suggest we use to reduce bumps, bruises and other injuries?" Thanks. Tom

Answer: We suggest you safety proof with bright yellow safety padding products. Although we've had several manufacturers use grey safety padding for machinery edges, the yellow is more visible in all lighting and tends to catch one's attention. Schools and day care centers often use the yellow or other vibrant colors such as sky blue, green, etc.

These products are all UV protected, fire resistant or retardant, etc.
I recommend that you make a list of the dangerous areas you want to protect and email it to us. We can then send you a quotation on the best ways to protect your employees.
Thanks for your question.
Sincerely, Barbara

Will this cushion give me a 3 inch boost?

by Barbara 22. June 2008 08:03

Subject: Question about the product Product Code: Seat Wedge Cushion with Blue Washable Cover Product Code: : CA-227

Q: "Hello, I need at least a three inch boost to see the road. Will this cushion give me the boost or will it collapse? How firm is this cushion? Thanks," Eloise

The maximum thickness of this cushion is 3 inches. It is a fairly firm cushion. However, the compression you'll experience is also related to your weight. Our experience is that if a cushion is too firm, it is also uncomfortable. (We once received a sample of a thick booster cushion that was so firm that when a 200 pound employee stood on the cushion, it made barely a dent. Mom who was then 85 tried it and sent to back to us as too hard.).

My favorite is the memory foam coccyx wedge seat cushion. It comes in tan or navy .

One other option is the Fleece Coccyx Wedge Seat Cushion with Handle which I share on my desk chair with Buddy, the Siamese cat. (He sleeps there when I am at the office during the day.)

All three cushions are 3 inches thick. You may need two cushions to boost you high enough.  See our website if you need a navy memory foam lumbar support cushion or a high density foam cushion with back strap and fluid resistant cover. We also have synthetic fleece neck pillows with polyester fill and in navy and in tan that strap around head rests for additional comfort as you drive or nap in your car.

Please contact us if you have further questions.

Sincerely,
Barbara
