Installation Height for Carbon Monoxide Alarms Is Your Choice

by Barbara 8. February 2013 10:52

Question about  installation height for most effective use of carbon monoxide alarms

Q:"How high do I need to install carbon monoxide alarms in my home?" Thanks. Rebecca

Answer: According to information from one of our manufacturers, you can install a CO alarm at any height in your home. The reason is that the molecular weight of air is almost identical to the weight of carbon monoxide. Air is typically composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Nitrogen has a specific weight of 28.013 while carbon monoxide is almost identical 28.011. CO mixes with
Air as their weights are approximately the same.

We advise you put the unit high enough that a child cannot tamper with the unit. Also remember that a minimum of 3 carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for a two story home, one on each level near the stairwells. Put one inside each bedroom if you close bedroom doors at night.

Direct plug-in units, CO alarms connected to a 12 or 24 volt security system and 9 volt battery operated ones give you many options.

We prefer the Costar 9RV, a 9 volt battery powered CO alarm that is for homes or recreational vehicles. These easily mount with two screws. The units cannot be reinstalled on the mounts unless there are batteries installed.

For homes with wired security systems, the CoStar Security System Carbon Monoxide Alarm,12-24SIR is a great choice.

Costar carbon monoxide alarms use a unique sensor that mimics red blood cells. Each sensor takes 28 days to "grow." The sensor reacts with carbon monoxide just as red blood cells do in our bodies. In other words, when a human is exposed to CO, the oxygen in the blood that attaches to red blood cells is replaced gradually by carbon monoxide. When carbon monoxide levels in an area near the sensor reach a level of 70 parts per million in a period of 60 to 240 minutes, the sensor is saturated sufficiently to set off an alarm. Below 35 ppm no alarm will sound. At 150 ppm, the alarm goes off within 10 to 50 minutes. At a level of 400 ppm, the alarm sounds within 4 to 12 minutes. 400 ppm alarm within 4 to 15 minutes.

Safe Home also sells RV carbon monoxide alarms that wire to both 12 volt systems, the coach and the engine, and have a 9 volt battery back-up. The CoStar 12RV-DB 12V RV CO Alarm W/9V Battery Backup protects you even if the 12 volt system is disconnected.

We also sell co alarms by other manufacturers that plug directly into 120VAC outlets. The only problem here is that few outlets are above a child's reach.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Thank you for your questions. Also consider requesting your company install the Safe Home Air Filters in their HVAC system and return air grilles if that is possible. Those will help with dirt, dust, allergen and odor control.

Barbara

All Furnace Air Goes Thru Safe Home Brand Disposable Furnace Filter With Self-Sealing Frame

by Barbara 14. December 2011 09:02

Question about why the Safe Home Duo 16 x 25 x 1 furnace filter is a better furnace filter than a washable metal one or a fiberglass disposable one.

Q: "Please explain why this furnace filter is superior to a washable metal furnace filter or a disposable fiberglass disposable furnace filter. Thanks. Sam

Answer: Differences are several:

  • All air must pass through the Safe Home Duo furnace filter because the frame is internal. The twin media covering the frame are self-sealing. To install, push the Safe Home filter into the one inch slot. The soft filter media seals against all 4 edges.
  • Each Safe Home Duo filter has two types of media: one layer is for dust, dirt and pollen; the second layer also contains an odor and formaldehyde absorbing layer.  Judged to be 95% effective at filtering out dust, dirt, allergens, etc.
  • Compare 95% effectiveness of the Duo with either an all metal filter or one made of fiberglass. Fiberglass tend to clog quickly with large dirt particles, restricting air flow while letting small particles go through. These smaller particles can include mold and bacteria. Fiberglass are often rated at 2% effective while non-electrostatic are rated at 4% effective or less.
  • Neither the metal washable filter nor the disposable fiberglass filter contains activated carbon and potassium permanganate, the filter media for odors and chemicals such as formaldehyde and paint fumes.
  • The Safe Home Duo is a MERV 8 rated filter made in the USA: inexpensive metal and fiberglass filters are often MERV 2 or 3.
  • No mess. No time spent washing filters. Just put the dirty Duo filter into the garbage and replace with a clean one every 3 to 4 months or more often if yours is an exceptionally dirty environment.

Installation Instructions: The white side of the filter should face incoming air. In most systems, the white side should face away from the air handler or furnace equipment. Air should enter the white side, which traps allergens, and exit through the dark side, which traps gases and odors.

Note: Check with your HVAC technician to verify that your system is able enough to handle the density of a MERV 8 filter before purchasing this or any other MERV 8 filter. Install this MERV 8 with Air Flow First Going through the White Media. Made in USA.

Thank you for your question. We sell the Safe Home Duo in many sizes. We also sell the Safe Home Duo Air Purify Furnace Filter 20x20x4 In. and other sizes in the 4 inch furnace filters. These thicker furnace filters also have self-sealing edges around a 4 inch furnace filter core to filter out allergens with the Formaldesorb carbon and potassium permanganate.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara
