Wooden Pet Gates Expand, Move, Step Over, Have Extensions Available and and Contain Most Small Pets

by Barbara 26. September 2010 12:34

Question about the Wooden Pet Gate, Step-Over, 20"Tall Walnut Finish.

Q: "I am looking for an expandable pet gate for small dogs that I can move from area to area of my house. Some areas that will need spanned are larger. Will this gate meet my needs? How large can I make it? Is is hard to move? I have two Chihuahuas. They are not jumpers What are the options? Thanks. Sheila.

Answer: This is a quality wooden gate made for Cardinal Gates for small dogs, small puppies and non-jumping dogs. The small dog gate is 20 inches tall, 1 inch thick and has bar spacings of 2.25 inches. The gate fits openings from 28 inches to 51.75 inches. Each gate extension adds 22.25 inches of width to the Step Over Gate. Each extension comes with one 'foot' piece. Each foot fits securely over the gate and has rubber feet to avoid harming floors. Add as many extensions as you like for a very long gate. The pet gate is easily moved. The basic gate expands and weighs about 6 lbs. Each extension weighs just under 5 pounds.

The gate and extensions come in several colors. All gates and extensions and foot pieces are made of hard wood.

Your choices are:

Do remember this is a free-standing gate with wide feet pieces. This is NOT a child safety gate or a gate for small jumping dogs. For example, a Boston Terrier coudl easily jump this gate as well as one that is 4 feet tall if he or she had a running start or desire.

Thanks for your question.

How to Install Cardinal Gates Deck Shield Netting on Outdoor Decks for Child Safety

by Barbara 22. September 2010 10:52

Question about Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Black Deck Shield Netting or the Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting

Q: "How difficult is installation of this deck netting? How long should I expect it to last? Our deck is shaded part of the day. Thanks. Joan.

Answer: Deck netting is easy to install. And it should last at minimum several years depending upon your location.

Installation of this outdoor safety netting is easier with two people although one person can do it. With two people, it is easier to stretch the netting and secure it. There are cable ties provided to attach the UV resistant mesh netting to the deck posts. Eye screws are also provided to attach the plastic netting to the deck surface. Some sun rot over time can be expected depending upon the amount of sun exposure. There is no material that is 100% rot resistant.

The major differences between the silver and the black deck netting are as follows:

  • Thickness: Silver is substantially sturdier and thicker—more than 7 times thicker than black. Black is approximately 0.26mm thick. Silver is approximately 1.98mm thick.
  • Size of openings: Silver: each "mesh" rectangle measures ½-inch hole size .  Black: each "mesh" rectangle measures about 1.25" x .75".
  • Visibility: silver is even less visible from a distance.
  • Height: 36 inches for black and 36 inches for the silver

Deck Netting Features:

  • Material: durable, weather-resistant plastic netting for child proofing.(polypropylene)
  • UV protected: sun "rot" is reduced.
  • Installation: quick and easy.
  • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
  • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.
  • Barely visible from a distance.

If you need shorter lengths, please contact us. We sell 15 ft and 30 ft lengths in both black and silver.

Thanks for your question. Please contact us if you need more help or have additional questions.

Install Safety First Automatic Gas Valve System and Prevent Gas Explosions In Home or Business

by Barbara 20. September 2010 13:13

Question about the Scentry III GFRAB Automatic Gas Valve and Gas Detector System and the Scentry III SFGVC Gas Valve Controller, No Gas Valve

Q:"After the explosion in San Bruno, CA on 9/9/2010, I am concerned about my home exploding. I have a natural gas furnace, a natural gas fireplace, a natural gas water heater and a natural gas range. I don't have a full basement: my crawl space is about 12 inches high. Drainage is excellent. There would be some moisture but not water. Can this automatic gas valve and sensor system system be installed there?I see that the Scentry III has a connection for an auto-dialer and also can be connected to a ventilation system. Thanks. Thomas."

Answer: This unit allows you to use remote gas detectors to place near your other gas appliances. There is a battery back-up available if you want protection during a power failure. We do have an installation manual available on our website for this unit. The Scentry Installation Manual.

The GFRAB stands for gas sensor, mounting feet, remote ready, alarm and battery and includes the gas valve shut-off/controller. NOTE: Must be used with a Scentry III gas valve (sold separately).  Each Scentry gas sensor is calibrated in a gaseous atmosphere so it will alarm at 10% of the lower explosive level (LEL) of the combustible gas. This is not a carbon monoxide alarm as it has only a combustible gas alarm sensor.

Scentry III-GFRAB Gas (Mounting) Feet Remote (Ready) Alarm Battery Specifications:

  • Case: ABS Plastic
  • Physical Size: 7.6 inches by 4.6 inches
  • Weight: 2.25 lbs
  • Color: Gray
  • Power consumption: 1.5va
  • Supports up to 4 calibrated remote sensors (not included)
  • Requires Scentry III-GVD gas valve (purchase separately)
  • Supports Battery Back-Up (Not Included)
  • Gas Valve Controller for combustible gasses such as natural gas or propane gas. Includes a 24 volt transformer.
  • Connections: screw terminals
  • Input Power: 115VAC, 60 Hz
  • Output Control Relays: 2 amps, 24 VAC
  • Alarm Signal Output: 12V DC @500 ma
  • Reset: manual
  • Sensor Type: Tin Dioxide Semiconductor
  • Alarm Points: Propane (LP) <5200 PPM
  • Alarm Points: Natural Gas / Methane <12,200 PPM
  • Manufactured Proudly in the USA for Safety First USA, Inc.
  • Warranty: 1 year from date of purchase.

The gas valves that interface are a 1/2 inch, a 3/4 inch and a 1 inch valve.

Scentry III-SFGVC Safety First Gas Valve Controller Specifications:
  • Case: ABS Plastic
  • Physical Size: 4.6 inches by 3.1 inches
  • Weight: .5 lb.
  • Color: Bone
  • Reset: manual
  • Output Control Relays: 4 amp, 24VAC
  • Power: 1.5va
  • Sensor Type: Tin Dioxide Semiconductor
  • Connections: screw terminals
  • Propane alarm point: <5200 PPM
  • Natural Gas/Methane<12,200 PPM
  • Note: Requires a UL Listed Scentry III .5 inch, .75 inch or 1 inch diaphragm type gas valve that is compatible (not included).
  • Note: Requires a 24V transformer (NOT INCLUDED). See installation instructions for specifications i.e. must match the transformer to power requirements of your gas valve.
  • Note: No option for battery back-up to be added later
  • Note: No option for additional sensors to be added later.
  • Made in USA.
  • Manufacturer: Safety First USA

The gas valves that interface are a 1/2 inch, a 3/4 inch and a 1 inch valve.

So the main differences between the units are that the Scentry III-GFRAB gas alarm and gas valve controller (shut-off) includes the 24 volt transformer, has mounting feet and can add options of battery back-up, remote gas sensors and remote alarms.  With the battery option, the pilot lights remain litt during intermittent power failures in regions such as the mountain states where electric power is not always continuous. A 12V output allows adding a phone dialer to alert owners of vacation homes, etc. when an unsafe condition has occurred. Remote gas sensors can be added near gas ranges, gas water heaters, gas furnaces, gas heaters, etc. to add protection using only one gas valve controller.

Please contact us if you have questions about what components to install.

Remember that you need carbon monoxide sensor alarms on every floor of your home and in every bedroom where you close the door. The CO monitor does not monitor propane or natural gas leaks: it monitors the carbon monoxide levels from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels like wood, coal, gas, charcoal, etc.

Thanks again for your timely question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Safe Home Room Air Return Grill Replacement Filters Can Create a Home Freer from Dirt and Chemicals

by Barbara 19. September 2010 10:15

Question about the SafeHome™ Duo 20 x 20 x 1 4 Pack and the Safe Home System Cold Air Return Purifier, 20 X 20 X 1

Q: "We just bought a new retirement home in Arizona. Instead of the usual furnace filter system we had up north, this HVAC system has one very large cold return air grille high on the wall in the family room.  Up north there were lots of cold air returns but none had a place for a filter and none were this large. We understand this is the new way of filtering air. The grille tips out and holds a one inch filter panel. We want to avoid any unnecessary house cleaning. Which cold air system do you recommend and why? Thanks. Pete."

Answer: Particularly in Southern and Western states where air conditioning is used most of the year, the newer homes have filter slots in return air grilles. One website notes that furnace filters located in the furnace plenum near the motor are meant to keep the motor clean, not the household air. The less dirt that gets to the motor, the more likely you'll get longer life. The problem is that dust and dirt get into the duct work. So filter grills not only keep the household air cleaner but also keep your duct work cleaner. Modifying older HVAC systems is difficult because the actual ductwork is often much smaller. If you put too high of a MERV rated filter into the furnace slot, you'll cut down the air movement and possibly have an overheated motor, too.

Safe Home™ sells the Safe Home Duo and the Safe Home System. Both are disposable filter products which means no messy washing, waiting for filters to dry and most likely running the unit without any filtration during that time.

The Duo has an internal metal frame with two filters, one for dust, mold, dirt and pollen and the other for gasses such as formaldehyde. The unit fits very tightly into the tip out filter grille holder because the filtration media surrounds the metal frame. The second layer, the inner layer, is impregnated with carbon and potassium permanganate which capture the VOC's such as formaldehyde and ammonia. We suggest changing that filter about every 3 months unless your home is subject to dust from remodeling, etc.

The second, the Safe Home System, consists of 5 filters of which 4 are electrostatic. These are pleated with wires that create the static charge. These 4 pre-filters that capture dust, pollen, dirt, etc. fit into the grille itself. The 5th filter, the VOC or volatile organic chemical filter, actually fits into the duct opening behind the grille. So it fits into the actual duct work. The System has 125 grams per square foot of activated carbon and FormadaSorb to remove the most common, hazardous pollutants. The replacement filters for the filter slot are electrostatic air purifier filters. These pre-filters should be changed at least every three months.

NOTE: Neither of these filters will remove carbon monoxide, radon gas or carbon dioxide. We recommend installing carbon monoxide monitors on every level of your home and in or near all sleeping areas. Test units regularly. Replace batteries at least annually.

So, either unit will meet your needs. Do check and make sure the carbon chemical fits. The Safe Home Duo and the Safe Home Filter System come in sizes to fit almost everyone's return air grille and/or furnace slot. If you have custom sized slots, please contact us for pricing on special sizes.

Thanks for your question.

Disposable Yellow Jacket and Wasp Traps Lure Stinging Insects Away from Food

by Barbara 8. September 2010 06:05

Question about the Contech Yellow Jacket and Wasp Trap

Q: "My wife is allergic to yellow jackets. Would this wasp trap help control the problem when we eat out on our deck? Thanks. Jim"

Answer:  Yes, we recommend that you place the Contech yellow jacket trap in the corners of your yard to draw them away from your deck. The wasp trap has no poison chemicals. Yellow jackets looks like bees but live underground and are aggressive. If you know where the yellow jackets are nesting, put these bait trap close and lure these insects into the trap unless those nests are near your deck. Avoid wasp stings or hornet wasp stings by using traps to lure the yellow jackets, wasps and hornets away from your deck.  Remember though that no trap is fool proof.

Among the traps Safe Home currently sells:

Yellow jackets are attracted to food, especially sweet smelling beverages and desserts. Oklahoma State University advises that paper wasps and yellow jackets and their nests should be avoided and not disturbed. Wasps and bees often visit garbage cans in picnic areas and other recreation sites, so it is best to avoid sitting or standing next to such sites. When wasps are common in recreation areas, carefully look for wasps and bees before sitting on the ground and check your food or drink before consumption. Stings inside the mouth and throat are particularly dangerous because of the potential of swelling and closing off the windpipe. When in wasp-infested areas, avoid wearing sweet-smelling colognes, perfumes, and hair sprays and bright orange, yellow, and blue clothing, as they will attract flying wasps. Khaki, tan, and dark colors are less attractive to wasps. If a wasp does approach you, it is best to remain still or move away slowly, because rapid movements such as swatting may stimulate stinging.
According to the University of The Contech wasp trap is safe, effective, and 100% pesticide free.

How and Why the Wasp and Yellow Jacket Trap Works:

Using the Contech Wasp Trap is easy. Simply place the bait in the bottom of the reusable plastic jar, add an inch of water and two drops of liquid dish soap, suspend the lure above the bait, and hang the trap from a tree or structure away from the house or patio (to avoid attracting wasps to occupied areas).

The trap’s patented bait and lure combination attracts nearby wasps and yellow jackets, and captures them within the jar. An attractive translucent cover conceals trapped wasps from view. After about 14 days, simply empty the dead wasps into the trash, replace the bait, and the reusable Wasp Trap is ready to go again.

The Wasp Trap uses a highly effective, yet safe and non-toxic attractant developed by Pherotech International - an industry leader in the development and commercialization of non-toxic insect trapping technology.
